Job Summary:

The Department of Philosophy at Furman University invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Philosophy, beginning August 1, 2027. Area of Specialization: History of Philosophy (Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy, Arabic and Islamic Philosophy, or Early Modern Philosophy); Area of Competence: Open. The department has need for courses across a wide range of pre-19th century contexts, so candidates who can teach in more than one historical period would be particularly welcome. In addition to their areas of specialized research, the successful candidate will have broad philosophical interests and will be a dynamic and engaging teacher committed to working with students with diverse interests and backgrounds.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will teach five courses per academic year, including both introductory and upper-level offerings. All members of the department are expected to teach at least one section of "Introduction to Philosophy" annually, as well as periodic First-Year Writing (FYW) seminars on a topic of the candidate's choosing. The department will be particularly interested in candidates whose teaching engages the history of philosophy in innovative ways, with the potential for intersections with one or more of Furman's interdisciplinary minors.

A Ph.D. in Philosophy is required by August 1, 2027.

You may also discuss any relevant professional development, service contributions, or other experiences that have refined your skills or demonstrate your efforts in these areas.

In addition, please include teaching evaluations (if available), sample syllabi (if available), and at least one writing sample (preferably single-authored). Additional materials may be requested at later stages of the search process for candidates who advance.
