Job description

THE POSITION Begin a dynamic and purpose-driven career as a Forensic DNA Scientist Trainee with the Pennsylvania State Police. In this role, you will receive hands-on training in scientific methods that support criminal investigations. Your work will contribute to accurate analysis and reliable results that help uphold justice.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK This position focuses on learning the scientific methods used to study DNA evidence that supports law enforcement investigations. The role combines hands-on laboratory practice with structured instruction in advanced technology and forensic procedures.

As a Forensic DNA Scientist Trainee, you will perform the following duties: Technical Training: Learn to use thermal cyclers, genetic analyzers, automation platforms, Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), and other tools used in forensic DNA work DNA Identification: Train in identifying human DNA profiles and applying chemical and biological techniques Sample Processing: Receive instruction in isolating, extracting, and amplifying DNA from forensic casework Profile Comparison: Practice comparing known and unknown DNA profiles and interpreting results as matches, non-matches, or inconclusive Evidence Handling: Gain experience in collecting, preserving, and documenting forensic evidence while maintaining proper chain of custody Record Preparation: Prepare detailed notes and reports that follow laboratory policies and legal requirements Equipment Checks: Assist with performance reviews and maintenance of laboratory instruments and supplies Interested in learning more. Work Schedule and Additional Information: Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or a closely related physical or natural science, which includes or is supplemented by 16 college credits in chemistry and three credits each in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and population genetics or statistics. Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.

Legal Requirements: You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements. This job title has been identified as performing critical duties. Prior to placement in this job title, the selected candidate regardless of their current job, must submit a report of medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer.
