(CTE) CULINARY ARTS & BAKERY SCIENCE TEACHER ASSISTANT

SALARY: $28.50 hourly
SUMMARY:
The Culinary Arts & Bakery Science Teacher Assistant supports the instructional program within the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Culinary Arts & Bakery Science pathway. This position assists students in developing technical, academic, and workplace readiness skills while promoting social, physical, and intellectual growth.
The successful candidate will help create engaging, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for careers and postsecondary opportunities in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, food service, hospitality, restaurant operations, catering, and related industries.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, food service, hospitality, catering, restaurant operations, or a related field.
- Associate's degree or higher in Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts, Hospitality Management, Food Service Management, or a related discipline preferred.
- Professional experience working in commercial kitchens, bakeries, restaurants, catering operations, hospitality settings, or other food-service environments.
- Knowledge of food preparation, baking techniques, sanitation, food safety, kitchen operations, equipment use, portion control, and proper food storage.
- Ability to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment, appliances, and culinary tools.
- Knowledge of workplace safety and food sanitation practices.
- Experience supporting students in hands-on, project-based learning environments.
- Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
- Interest in supporting students pursuing careers in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts, hospitality, and food service.
POSITION DETAILS:
- Full-time Teaching Assistant position at Ypsilanti Community High School.
- Supports Culinary Arts & Bakery Science CTE courses.
- Industry experience is highly valued.
- Assists with classroom instruction, commercial kitchen and bakery laboratory activities, food preparation, baking, catering, and other hands-on learning experiences.
- Helps maintain a safe, sanitary, organized, and professional culinary learning environment.
- Assists students in developing industry-standard culinary, baking, customer service, and workplace readiness skills.
- Training materials, curriculum resources, kitchen procedures, recipes, and instructional guides will be provided to support onboarding and transition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assist the teacher in implementing the district-approved curriculum.
- Support classroom, commercial kitchen, bakery laboratory, and other instructional activities.
- Assist students with food preparation, cooking techniques, baking and pastry production, recipe execution, food presentation, and other culinary skills.
- Promote and reinforce proper food safety, sanitation, personal hygiene, and kitchen safety procedures.
- Assist students with the safe and appropriate use of commercial kitchen equipment, appliances, utensils, and culinary tools.
- Help maintain a classroom and kitchen environment conducive to learning, student engagement, and professional culinary practices.
- Encourage positive student behavior and reinforce classroom, kitchen, and workplace expectations.
- Support instructional activities designed to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Assist with preparing ingredients, recipes, equipment, supplies, and instructional resources for culinary and bakery laboratory experiences.
- Help monitor student progress and maintain appropriate records as directed by the teacher.
- Assist with inventory, organization, storage, and maintenance of kitchen equipment, food products, ingredients, utensils, and classroom supplies.
- Support proper receiving, labeling, storage, rotation, and handling of food products and ingredients.
- Support students in developing workplace readiness, professionalism, customer service, teamwork, leadership, time management, and technical skills.
- Assist the instructor in preparing students for industry-recognized certifications, culinary competitions, work-based learning experiences, and career pathways when appropriate.
- Assist students with catering, food service, school events, culinary showcases, and other program-related activities.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, industry partners, and community organizations as needed.
- Help reinforce professional standards related to attendance, punctuality, appearance, communication, teamwork, and workplace conduct.
- Be available for school-related activities, catering events, student competitions, community events, and other assigned responsibilities.
