Job description

Are you passionate about libraries, people, and public service? The Chesapeake Public Library ( CPL ) is seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented Library Assistant II to join our team in a part-time capacity. This opportunity is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, patron-centered environment.
As a Library Assistant II, you'll support multiple public service areas-including Circulation, Adult Services, and Youth & Family Services ( YFS )-by providing high-quality service and helping connect our diverse community to resources, learning, and enrichment.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality, paraprofessional support at public service desks by assisting patrons with computers, public access catalogs, copiers, fax machines, A/V equipment, eReaders, and locating library materials.
  • Offer reader's advisory, job search assistance, and homework help using both print and digital resources.
  • Promote library programs and services using approved social media channels and printed materials.
  • Maintain and update patron accounts using CPL's automated systems, including time management, circulation, and payment software.
  • Handle point-of-sale transactions with accuracy and professionalism, including processing payments for fines, fees, merchandise sales, and donations.
  • Receive, check in, and reshelve returned library materials accurately and efficiently.
  • Monitor public computer usage and enforce library policies to maintain a welcoming and productive environment.
  • Supervise department operations during assigned shifts, including evenings and weekends, in the absence of senior staff.
  • Actively participate in internal committees, projects, and initiatives to support library goals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned and assist at other service points as needed.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT :
Requires one year of college in liberal arts or library science or any equivalent combination of education and customer service experience.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of 6 months related, full-time equivalent library or customer service experience. Six months' public library experience preferred.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :
Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards .
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Requirements:
Experience with automated circulation systems highly desired.
Public library-related experience desired.
Experience working with computers is highly desired.
Comfortable with learning and demonstrating usage of computers, Internet, library catalog, eReaders, eBooks, research databases, e-mail, photocopiers, and fax machines.
Flexibility and a willingness to learn new tools such as laser cutters, Cricuts, and 3D printing. The ability to support activities such as training and assisting customers with sewing and crafting.
