Asic Development Engineer information

What is the difference between Asic Development Engineer vs FPGA Design Engineer?

AspectAsic Development EngineerFPGA Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, VLSI, or related fields; knowledge of ASIC design toolsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Digital Design; familiarity with FPGA development tools
Work EnvironmentDesigning and verifying custom silicon chips in semiconductor labs or R&D centersDeveloping and testing FPGA-based solutions in hardware labs or embedded systems environments
Industry UsageUsed in semiconductor companies, integrated circuit design firms, and tech giantsCommon in telecommunications, aerospace, and embedded systems industries

While both roles involve digital hardware design, Asic Development Engineers focus on creating custom chips for high-performance applications, whereas FPGA Design Engineers work on programmable hardware solutions. Both require strong digital design skills and familiarity with hardware description languages, but their end products and development environments differ.

Are ASIC Development Engineers in demand?

ASIC Development Engineers are in high demand due to the growing need for custom hardware solutions in industries like telecommunications, consumer electronics, and automotive. Skilled engineers with knowledge of hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog, along with experience in FPGA and ASIC design, are particularly sought after in the technology sector.

How much do ASIC development engineers make?

ASIC development engineers typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior engineers with specialized skills in hardware description languages and verification tools can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $150,000.

What does an ASIC development engineer do?

An ASIC development engineer designs, develops, and tests application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) used in electronic devices. They work with hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and use CAD tools to create efficient chip architectures that meet performance and power specifications.

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we’re looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don’t shy away from humanity’s challenges but are determined to help solve them.

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward.

Job Role and Responsibility: AMD, Inc., is hiring Product Development Engineer to Research, design, develop, and/or test electronic components and systems for semiconductor and related device manufacturing, employing knowledge of electronic theory. Develop, review, and execute comprehensive test plans. Perform definition, design, verification, and/or documentation for ASIC development. Determine architecture design, logic design, and/or system simulation. Develop and maintain automation scripts.  Define module interfaces/formats for simulation. Contribute to the development of multidimensional designs involving the layout of complex integrated circuits. Evaluate all aspects of the process flow from high-level designs to synthesis, place and route, and timing and power use. Work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Under limited supervision, exercise judgment within defined company procedures and practices to select methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Utilize knowledge of computers and electronics, including circuit boards, processors, chips, and electronic equipment, as well as knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles. Apply knowledge of engineering principles, best practices, and technologies to the design, development, and testing of various AMD products.
