Job Description:

The Pharmacy Technician Trainee demonstrates consistent application of knowledge and skills in assisting the pharmacist in the execution of appropriate, safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care.

Job Specifics:

Schedule: Variable 10-hour days with rotations to evening shift every 4th week, and daily assignments of main pharmacy and oncology pharmacy, including IV compounding and restocking Omnicells throughout hospital.

Shift Details:

Day shift covers the hours of 6:30 – 7:30 pm

Evening shift 1:30 pm – 11:30 pm

Every other weekend rotation

Every other holiday rotation

Location: St. Mary’s Regional Hospital, Colorado

Essential Functions

  • The incumbent participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and is an integral part of the pharmacy team.

  • Caregivers in this position will receive paid on the job training and are expected to practice in compliance with pharmacy technician trainee licensure.

  • The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will be enrolled in an approved program and complete coursework to become a licensed pharmacy technician.

  • Upon completion of the program the trainee is required to submit for licensure. It is expected that any trainee will complete coursework within one year of starting the program.

  • Technician trainee will be paid for practical experience.

  • Didactic coursework will be completed by the technician trainee outside of working hours and is not compensated.

  • Trainee may be required to work weekends, nights, and holidays.

  • The Pharmacy Technician Trainee will prepare medication orders, receive prescriptions, complete required paperwork, assist with billing, stock medication, and deliver medication to patients.

  • Supports patients, pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals in relevant areas of responsibility.

  • Communicates effectively with all caregivers and stakeholders regarding responsibilities and identified concerns.

Skills

  • Competently and effectively learns technical responsibilities as assigned and seeks appropriate training and peer feedback on routine responsibilities.

  • The Pharmacy Technician Trainee understands and complies with state and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures, and guidelines related to their specific area of practice and participates and supports financial responsibilities of the department, facility, and Intermountain Healthcare.

  • Responsible to provide delivery of medications, information, and services in a professional, timely manner and to seek a team approach to developing and achieving best practices and processes.

  • Consistently attains appropriate supervision and accuracy checks by the pharmacist(s) and clearly understands when a pharmacist is required to verify tasks and activities to deliver detail-oriented, consistent, and flexible care.

Qualifications

  • Candidate must be at least 17 years old

  • Candidate will enroll or be enrolled in a Pharmacy Technician training program per state guidelines

  • Utah: Must apply for Pharmacy Technician Trainee License within four weeks of hire date and obtain within eight weeks of hire

  • Colorado: Must apply for provisional Pharmacy Technician Registration

  • Montana: Must apply for a provisional Pharmacy Technician Trainee License

  • Idaho: No training license required

  • Nevada: Must apply for Pharmacy Technician Trainee License

  • Demonstrated basic computer skills and attention to detail
