What are APS Part Time jobs?

APS Part Time jobs refer to part-time positions within the Australian Public Service (APS). These roles offer flexible working hours, usually less than 38 hours per week, and are designed to help employees balance work with other commitments such as study, family, or personal interests. Part-time APS employees have access to similar benefits as full-time staff, including leave entitlements and opportunities for career development. These positions are available across a range of government departments and agencies throughout Australia.

What are the typical work arrangements and expectations for APS part-time employees?

APS (Australian Public Service) part-time roles often offer flexible work arrangements, such as set or variable shifts, to help employees balance work with personal commitments. Part-time staff are expected to contribute to team projects and collaborate with full-time colleagues, ensuring continuity and meeting organizational goals. Depending on the agency, part-time employees may participate in training, regular meetings, and performance reviews, similar to their full-time counterparts. Career progression opportunities are available, although advancement may sometimes require transitioning to full-time or higher classification roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an APS Part Time employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as an APS (Australian Public Service) Part Time employee, you generally need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of public sector protocols, often supported by relevant education or experience. Familiarity with government systems such as records management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and internal communication platforms is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help employees effectively collaborate and contribute to departmental goals. These competencies are essential for maintaining high standards of public service and ensuring efficient, reliable support in a part-time capacity.

PART-TIME CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE
Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS)
Durham, NC
Do you love helping people as much as you love helping animals?
The Animal Protection Society of Durham is looking for a compassionate, energetic, and customer-focused Part-Time Customer Service Representative to join our Lifesaving Programs team. This is more than a front desk positionโ€”it's an opportunity to make a direct impact on the lives of animals and the people who care for them.
As the first point of contact for visitors, adopters, foster families, volunteers, and pet owners, you will play a critical role in creating positive experiences while supporting APS's mission of protecting and improving the lives of animals in our community.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Help families find their new best friend through the adoption process.
  • Assist pet owners with reclaiming lost pets.
  • Answer phones, emails, and visitor inquiries with professionalism and compassion.
  • Provide education on responsible pet ownership and available community resources.
  • Maintain accurate records and process transactions.
  • Collaborate with Animal Care, Medical, Behavior, and Volunteer teams to support shelter operations.
  • Assist with special events, promotions, and community outreach efforts.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in fast-paced or emotionally sensitive situations.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Passion for animal welfare and helping people.
  • Attention to detail and accurate data entry skills.
  • Positive, team-oriented attitude.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous animal shelter, veterinary, rescue, or animal welfare experience.
  • Bilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with Chameleon or similar shelter management software.
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and positive reinforcement practices.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments..
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a busy shelter environment.
  • Availability to work weekends and flexible schedules based on operational needs.

WHY APS?
At APS, every day brings an opportunity to save lives, support families, and strengthen our community. We are a team of dedicated professionals, volunteers, and animal advocates who work together to create positive outcomes for animals in need.
If you are passionate about animals, enjoy helping people, and thrive in a mission-driven environment, we'd love to hear from you!
Apply today and help make a differenceโ€”one animal, one family, and one community at a time.
