Job description

SMS Shipbreaking, LLC is one of the few approved ship recyclers in the nation and also handles the dismantling and recycling of oil drilling rigs and oil production platforms. An industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/workers’ safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS in Brownsville, TX is seeking a highly skilled and safety-focused Ship Cutter.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for cutting scrap metal materials into proscribed sizes using a handheld torch in a designated area
  • Inspect the cutting equipment (torch and hoses) assigned
  • Ensure proper cutting procedures are followed to prevent damage to equipment and personal injury
  • Ability to assess and distinguish between varying types of scrap metal material to determine appropriate cutting method
  • Knowledge of safe cutting and related torch burning activities, including proper PPE and cutting process and procedures
  • Make sure the gas and oxygen filters are in good safe condition
  • Inspect cut vessel section prior to hot work to ensure any and all tanks have been drained and free of flammable liquids and all insulation, wood and cable have been removed
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety requirements in a scrap yard environment, including use of proper PPE
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned

Must pass employee physical and drug screen.
