POSITION OVERVIEW:
Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting for an Applications Engineer to work at our Glenmore Office (Suite 240, 4000 Glenmore Court SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 5R8). The Applications Engineer focuses on supporting various applications and processes. This role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, including analyzing customer requirements to propose potential solutions, coordinating with vendors for quotations and reviewing client requirements and specifications.
Reporting to the Applications Engineering Manager, the Applications Engineer is involved in conducting optimization, sizing, and estimation of appropriate equipment using various software tools. The Applications Engineer plays a crucial role in process design and troubleshooting, continuously striving to optimize performance. Additionally, this position demands active participation in the development and maintenance of tools and procedures, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the department. The role requires a blend of technical knowledge, analytical skills, and effective communication, providing a unique opportunity for learning and professional growth within the engineering field.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
INQUIRY MANAGEMENT, ANALYSIS AND PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT (Weighting 30%)Inquiry Analysis
  • Meticulously review each inquiry to identify and extract all critical and relevant information.
  • Pay attention to specific customer requirements, technical specifications, and any other crucial details mentioned in the inquiry.
Requirement Gathering & Analysis
  • Engage with customers as necessary to gather all relevant information and clarify any ambiguities in their requirements.
  • Ensure a complete understanding of the customer’s needs and expectations.
  • Analyze the customer’s requirements with attention to detail, considering all provided specifications, constraints, and desired outcomes.
  • Identify and list out all possible solutions, options, or alternatives that could meet the customer’s needs.
Proposal Development
  • Develop detailed technical proposals for the offered equipment or packages.
  • Outline compliance with requirements, deviations and comments or exceptions.
  • Complete technical clarifications on submitted proposals.
                                                           
 EQUIPMENT SIZING & SELECTION (Weighting 30%)Process Simulation
  • Create process simulations in Symmetry or Promax for various different systems or technologies
  • Optimize process simulations based on client requirements to meet required specifications
  • Investigate opportunities to increase cost effectiveness of the simulated system or reduce power requirements to improve project CAPEX and/or OPEX
  • Investigate possible technologies or processes available to provide the client’s product requirements
Process Equipment Sizing
  • Use compressor sizing software to accurately size compressors based on project specifications and requirements.
  • Conduct sizing of separators, fractionation towers, accumulators and scrubbers using in-house tools.
  • Conduct preliminary sizing of heat exchangers using HTRI software
  • Ensure accuracy in input parameters and assumptions used in the sizing calculations.
  • Document the equipment sizing and selection process, including all calculations, assumptions, and final recommendations.
Communication, Coordination & Documentation
  • Effectively communicate equipment specifications and requirements to the project team, procurement department, or external vendors as needed.
  • Coordinate with other departments or teams to ensure seamless integration of the selected equipment into the overall system or project.
REQUEST FOR QUOTATION (RFQ) MANAGEMENT (Weighting 30%)Request For Quotation (RFQ) Preparation & Vendor Selection
  • Gather all necessary information and specifications required for the RFQ, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepare the RFQ documents in accordance with Startec’s templates and guidelines, ensuring all necessary details are included and clearly presented.
  • Identify potential vendors and suppliers who can provide the required products or services.
  • Communicate with vendors to send out RFQs, ensuring they receive all necessary information and understand the requirements.
Request For Quotation (RFQ) Monitoring & Response Evaluation
  • Monitor the status of all sent RFQs, ensuring timely responses from vendors.
  • Follow up with vendors as necessary to clarify any questions, provide additional information, or urge timely responses.
  • Upon receipt of vendor responses, evaluate the quotations both technically and commercially.
  • Compile and summarize the RFQ responses to facilitate easy comparison and decision-making.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Ensure that all RFQ documentation and vendor communications are properly filed and documented in accordance with Startec’s procedures.
  • Prepare summary reports of the RFQ process, highlighting any significant findings, discrepancies, or recommendations.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT (Weighting 10%)Knowledge Sharing & Training
  • Participate in the regular review of existing procedures and work instructions, ensuring they are up to date and in line with current best practices.
  • Suggest modifications and updates to procedures to enhance clarity, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development of training materials and resources to support the implementation of new tools and procedures.
  • Participate in knowledge sharing sessions, workshops, and training programs to disseminate information about updated tools and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Chemical or Mechanical Engineering degree with P.Eng. designation from APEGA.
  • 4-6 years' experience in the energy industry, a focus in gas processing or process packaging is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of gas processing systems such as propane refrigeration, amine sweetening, condensate stabilization, fractionation, compression
  • Experience using process simulation software such as Symmetry considered a strong asset.
  • Experience using HTRI considered an asset.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
