What does an Application Integration Engineer do?

An Application Integration Engineer is responsible for connecting different software applications and systems so they work seamlessly together within an organization. They design, develop, and implement integration solutions, often using middleware, APIs, or other technologies to ensure data flows smoothly between applications. Their work helps businesses automate processes, improve efficiency, and ensure that information is accessible and consistent across platforms. These engineers also troubleshoot integration issues and maintain system interoperability as technologies evolve.

What is the difference between Application Integration Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectApplication Integration EngineerSoftware Developer
Primary FocusDesigning and implementing system integrations and data flowsDeveloping software applications and features
Required SkillsAPI development, middleware, system architectureProgramming languages, software design, coding
Work EnvironmentIT teams, enterprise systems, integration platformsDevelopment teams, software companies, startups
CertificationsAPI, cloud, or middleware certificationsProgramming language certifications, software development courses

While both roles involve technical skills, Application Integration Engineers focus on connecting different systems and ensuring seamless data flow, whereas Software Developers create new applications and features. The roles often collaborate but serve distinct functions within tech organizations.

What are some typical challenges Application Integration Engineers face when connecting multiple enterprise systems?

Application Integration Engineers often encounter challenges such as handling differences in data formats, ensuring secure and reliable data transfer, and managing compatibility between legacy systems and modern applications. Another common issue is troubleshooting and resolving failures in real-time data synchronization without disrupting business operations. Effective communication with stakeholders from various departments is essential to gather requirements and maintain seamless workflows across integrated systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Application Integration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in software engineering, data integration, and API design, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft or Dell Boomi), middleware solutions, and protocols such as REST, SOAP, and message queues is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between business requirements and technical implementation. These abilities are vital to ensure seamless, secure, and scalable integration of enterprise applications, which drives organizational efficiency.

As your initial project assignment, you will support the unique needs of our client as a Application Integration Engineer.Project Summary
The Application Integration Engineer is responsible for leading the technical onboarding of application workloads onto AKS, with primary focus on Adexone, BdBridge, and Pipestress. This role bridges the gap between application owners, developers, infrastructure engineers, Kubernetes engineers, DevOps engineers, security teams, and operations teams. The engineer will assess current application architecture, identify dependencies, define runtime requirements, support container deployment, validate connectivity, coordinate testing, resolve integration issues, and document workload-specific deployment and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assess current-state architecture for Adexone, BdBridge, and Pipestress, including runtime components, hosting model, dependencies, data flows, authentication patterns, and operational requirements.
  • Identify container image readiness, source repositories, build artifacts, configuration files, deployment manifests, service dependencies, and runtime parameters.
  • Define AKS deployment requirements for each application, including environment variables, secrets, certificates, DNS names, ingress requirements, APIs, databases, file storage, message queues, and external service integrations.
  • Work with Kubernetes and DevOps engineers to translate application requirements into Kubernetes manifests, Helm charts, Kustomize overlays, pipeline variables, and release workflows.
  • Validate application connectivity to required databases, APIs, file stores, identity providers, external endpoints, and internal enterprise services.
  • Support application deployment, smoke testing, functional testing, UAT support, defect triage, and remediation.
  • Coordinate with application owners and SMEs to define acceptance criteria, validation procedures, health checks, and go-live readiness criteria.
  • Support logging, telemetry, and alerting requirements in coordination with Operations/SRE and Security teams.
  • Document deployment steps, configuration parameters, dependencies, rollback procedures, known issues, and operational support procedures.
  • Assist with migration from current hosting models to AKS where applications are already containerized or near container-ready.

Required For This Opportunity
  • 5+ years of experience supporting enterprise application integration, application deployment, application modernization, or cloud migration projects.
  • Experience integrating applications into containerized, cloud-hosted, or Kubernetes-based environments.
  • Strong understanding of application architecture, APIs, databases, authentication, certificates, secrets, environment configuration, file storage, and release validation.
  • Experience working with Kubernetes deployment concepts including deployments, services, ingress, ConfigMaps, Secrets, persistent volumes, and health probes.
  • Experience supporting application deployments through Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, or similar CI/CD tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot application startup failures, connectivity issues, configuration errors, TLS/certificate problems, dependency failures, and runtime exceptions.
  • Experience working directly with application owners, developers, infrastructure engineers, security teams, and operations teams.
  • Ability to document application dependency matrices, deployment procedures, test results, and operational handoff materials.

Nice to Have Skills
  • Experience with Azure Kubernetes Service.
  • Experience working in Azure Government, GCC High, DoD, DIB, Federal, or regulated enterprise environments.
  • Familiarity with Dockerfiles, container image registries, runtime configuration, and image promotion.
  • Familiarity with Helm, Kustomize, YAML manifests, and Kubernetes troubleshooting.
  • Experience with SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Azure SQL, storage services, API gateways, message queues, or enterprise integration services.
  • Experience supporting applications subject to CMMC, CUI, ITAR, NIST, FedRAMP, or similar compliance requirements.
  • Experience supporting engineering, manufacturing, industrial, shipyard, or regulated technical workloads.
  • Experience developing application validation plans, smoke test scripts, and UAT support materials.
