These changes can lead to frequent updates in test cases, the need for agile adaptation in testing strategies, and potential communication gaps between testers and developers. Staying organized and maintaining clear documentation is essential, as is proactive collaboration with development teams to ensure that testing remains aligned with the latest requirements. Embracing automation tools can also help manage repetitive tasks and keep up with the rapid pace of change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Application Tester, and why are they important?

Job description

Overview

VTG is currently seeking a Senior Automated tester who will work as part of a small test team supporting multiple software applications in varying stages of deployment (from emerging technologies to legacy systems). This position requires knowledge of modern automated testing methodologies and technologies. The person in this role will be responsible for manual testing when the coding of an automated solution is impractical or not desirable. As the technology stack expands and grows, our team of testers may be required to work with the application developers to support performance/load testing to fully evaluate the application capabilities.

What will you do?
  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks and scripts using Java and Selenium WebDriver.
  • Create and execute comprehensive test plans, test cases, test procedures, and test scenarios for both manual and automated testing efforts.
  • Analyze business and technical requirements to identify test coverage needs and potential failure points.
  • Independently evaluate developer deliverables and engineer test solutions that validate both expected outcomes and edge-case scenarios.
  • Perform data validation and backend testing using SQL queries across Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL databases.
  • Conduct functional, integration, regression, system, and end-to-end testing.
  • Utilize testing tools such as Selenium and JMeter to support automation and performance testing initiatives.
  • Maintain and enhance test environments, automation frameworks, and supporting test infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with developers, business analysts, and stakeholders to ensure quality standards are met throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Ensure testing methodologies incorporate known vulnerabilities, security considerations, and industry best practices.
  • Document, track, and communicate defects, test results, and quality metrics.
  • Execute testing using repeatable, scalable processes aligned with industry standards and best practices.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to enhance testing efficiency and automation coverage.

Do you have what it takes?

Must possess an active TS/SCI clearance with Poly on day one of employment

  • Strong hands-on experience developing automated test solutions using Java.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Selenium WebDriver.
  • Experience writing custom automation code rather than relying solely on record-and-playback tools.
  • Strong SQL skills with experience validating data in Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL databases.
  • Experience using integrated development environments (IDEs) such as IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, or NetBeans.
  • Experience working in Linux environments, including Bash scripting, command-line operations, and tools such as vi/vim.
  • Proven experience creating and maintaining test plans, test cases, test scripts, and testing documentation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in both manual and automated testing methodologies.
  • Experience with performance and load testing tools such as JMeter.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify root causes of software defects.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced, evolving technical environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
