The Hardware Engineering Department is seeking a leader to manage the mechanical drafting team, consisting of CAD modelers, drafting and design checking. Emphasis is placed on leading a team of drafters and engineers that supports both development and production programs, ensuring quality engineering solutions. Duties will include managing the day-to-day workload of the team, interfacing with the program teams to help meet schedule, performance reviews, work load forecasting, and interfacing with external partners. This is a dual role manager position, involving significant technical responsibilities as well.
Our engineering work includes full life-cycle programs including design, development, system integration, hands-on testing, training, and production. The successful candidate will demonstrate a broad skill set that is balanced between interpersonal, business, and technical capabilities. The successful candidate will have a track record as an effective communicator and problem solver who is able to develop and maintain good working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to operate in a team environment and collaborate across the sector business areas as required to accomplish team goals.
This position is dual role, encompassing both people management and project/technical leadership. Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Functional management of 10 to 12 designers, to include performance management, career development, staffing, and compensation planning
  • Providing project and technical oversight for design activities performed by the group
  • Maintaining and ensuring application of design processes and guidelines used in the group
  • Developing proposal inputs and reviewing proposal content for both internal and external customers
  • Collaborating with peer managers to ensure consistency across multiple work groups
  • Supporting department initiatives, recruiting, technology roadmap creation, cross-campus/sector involvement, and internally funded projects
  • Recruiting, interviewing, and hiring new personnel
  • Fostering employee engagement and knowledge sharing

The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary hardware design and analysis, an understanding of design for manufacturing practices, production engineering, developing engineering processes and procedures, and an understanding of engineering's role in supporting small to medium production quantities.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in a STEM related field with 6 years of relevant experience; OR a Bachelor's Degree in a STEM related field with 8 years of relevant experience; OR an Associate's Degree in a STEM related field with 10 years of relevant experience; OR a High School Diploma/GED with 12 years of relevant experience is required
  • Minimum of 6 years experience in MCAD design, creating 3D CAD models and engineering drawings of mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Minimum of 6 years experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work within diverse teams
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams as a functional manager, program manager, technical lead, and/or other significant leadership role
  • Proficiency in using common engineering design, production and office tools
  • US Citizen with active Secret clearance. Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SSBI and pass a polygraph

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with both Siemens NX, Teamcenter and Mission Product Lifecycle Management (MPLM)
  • Experience in using the following standards for design development:
    • ASME Y14.100 - Engineering Drawing Practices
    • ASME Y14.5 - Dimensioning and Tolerancing
    • ASME Y14.41 - Digital Product Definition Data Practices
    • MIL-STD-31000 - Technical Data Packages
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability principles, GD&T interpretation, and tolerance stack up analysis
  • Previous design experience with subsea vehicles and mechanical packages
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment where multiple projects are being developed and deployed simultaneously
  • Experience with program management, functional management, and/or customer management
  • Experience with business development activities
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph

Primary Level Salary Range: $139,800.00 - $209,800.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
