What is an app optimization specialist?

App Optimization Specialists are professionals who focus on improving the performance, visibility, and user experience of mobile applications. Their responsibilities often include optimizing app store listings (ASO), analyzing user data, identifying performance bottlenecks, and implementing strategies to increase downloads and engagement. They work closely with developers, marketers, and designers to ensure the app meets technical standards and user expectations. By staying up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices, they help apps achieve higher rankings and better user retention.

What are some common challenges an app optimization specialist faces when collaborating with development and marketing teams?

App Optimization Specialists often navigate the challenge of aligning technical improvements with business and marketing goals. Balancing user experience enhancements, such as app speed and usability, with feature requests from stakeholders can require effective communication and prioritization skills. Additionally, they collaborate closely with developers to implement updates and with marketing teams to analyze user data, ensuring that optimization efforts support both growth and retention strategies. Managing these cross-functional relationships and maintaining a data-driven approach are key aspects of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an app optimization specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an App Optimization Specialist, you need a deep understanding of mobile analytics, A/B testing, and user acquisition strategies, typically supported by a degree in marketing, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Firebase, App Store Connect, Google Analytics, and mobile attribution platforms is essential. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills help you interpret data and collaborate with development and marketing teams. These skills and tools are crucial to driving app growth, improving user experience, and maximizing ROI in a competitive mobile marketplace.

Analyze performance data to uncover insights, trends, and opportunities to improve ROI and user quality.

Collaborate with:

  • analytics and BI teams to define success metrics, implement tracking, and ensure data accuracy.
  • Product and CRM teams to improve onboarding, retention, and LTV of acquired users
  • Oversee MMP (mobile measurement platform) relationship and manage related asks from internal stakeholders as well as external partners
  • Manage budgets, forecasts, and pacing to deliver efficient and scalable growth.
  • Optimizing web-to-app journeys: Help shape the conversion paths from web to app, improving landing experiences and increasing activation.
  • Youโ€™ll partner with Research, Product and Brand to ensure we communicate a clear and differentiated app value to new and existing users.
  • Stay current with mobile ecosystem trends, privacy updates (e.g., SKAN, ATT), and best practices.
Who you are:

3-5 years of experience in performance marketing or growth marketing, with a focus on mobile app acquisition.

Proven track record managing paid app install campaigns and ASO programs.

Strong analytical and quantitative skills; proficiency with tools such as Appsflyer, Firebase, Adjust, Kochava, Tableau.

Experience with A/B testing, creative optimization, and data-driven decision-making.

Deep understanding of mobile attribution, tracking, and privacy frameworks.

Exceptional collaboration skills and ability to work cross-functionally with marketing, product, and analytics teams.

Passion for travel, technology, and innovation in the mobile space.

Illustrated history of living the values necessary to Priceline: Customer, Innovation, Team, Accountability and Trust.
