Job description

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) serving as the Outpatient Care Unit (OCU) is a credentialed and privileged to serve as a licensed independent practitioner and is a member of the OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws.


The OCU APP has the responsibility to provide overnight care for patients who are on daypatient or extended recovery following a surgery or procedure requiring a stay up to 2 nights. They are responsible for medical and post-operative management of a wide variety of surgeries/procedures. Additionally, the APP is responsible to partner with the patient, family, nursing, pharmacist, and surgical and procedural teams to impact timely and effective discharges and patient flow; support for emergency response and care escalation; impact patient and family experience through communication and education; promote an interdisciplinary approach to care; and support new processes to improve patient outcomes.


In addition to key job responsibilities, qualifications and other job requirements listed below, the APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.


  • Clinical Activities (not related to teaching or research): Assure the safe, efficient, high quality and customer oriented management of patient care to identified patient populations, including but not limited to completing a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s status; developing, monitoring and revising, as appropriate, an evidence-based treatment plan that addresses diagnoses, patterns of disease, risk factors, and treatment alternatives; treat many common acute and chronic health problems; interpret diagnostic tests prescribe and manage medications and other therapies, provide health teaching with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and, refer patients to other healthcare professionals as necessary.
  • Position Specific The APP in the Outpatient Care Unit will be responsible for the evaluation and management of individuals with postoperative care needs of a variety of surgical procedures. The practice will include, but not be limited to, comprehensive physical assessment, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and required follow-up-up management, actively advancing patient progress toward discharge, patient and family education. The APP will be responsible for timely completion of documentation of progress notes and of significant events, as needed. Communicate and/or escalate to the surgical and procedural team for challenging or emergent patient situations. Management of emergency patient situations.
  • Scholarship (improvement science, research, writing, abstracts, grant supported work, presentations, etc.): Keep abreast of changes in field and applies knowledge to identify and recommend enhancements to clinical quality, patient experience/satisfaction, length of stay and to achieve improvement that demonstrates a higher standard of care. Assesses and recommends initiatives to improve performance indicators related to patient experience, quality, and costs. Professional development meeting the expectations of ongoing certification. Demonstrates success or productivity in the field as evidenced by securing research funding, publication in journals and/or other forms of peer presentations. 
  • APP should be willing to complete all regulatory requirements and participate in all relevant clinical research activities within the program.
  • Teaching/ Clinical Supervision: Support OHSU’s academic missions by participating in the design, development, and assessment of program curricula for professional (advanced practice nursing, medicine, and physician associate) specialty areas; including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects and assessment measures. Teach program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes; academic advising and career related counseling for students; monitoring student retention and identifying and assisting at-risk students.

  • Deliver individual instruction to support fellows, residents, graduate APP students, and other clinical learners to support their personal program of learning in the applicable specialty area. Provide instruction and review of the practices, policies and procedures in a variety of functions; including but not limited to development of treatment plans, interpretation of clinical diagnostic data; developing orders; patient and family communication and education; management of medical equipment, electronic medical records; performing procedures, and transitioning patients to the next level of care. Assures adherence to the specialty specific protocols, best practices, quality, and organizational indicators. Provides input to the performance of the resident or graduate APP student as a provider or graduate APP student provider in the practice setting. 


Education

  • Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing in a recognized APRN specialty (Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, or Nurse Practitioner)
    - OR -
  • Successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant/Associate Studies from an accredited program.
    - OR -
  • Appropriate equivalent degree and certification

Experience

  • Must have at least 2 years of advanced practice patient management experience in acute or critical care, preferably with surgical patients.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards, the latter set forth as an addendum to the position description.
  • Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical record, word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current licensure as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider governing board(s).
  • ACLS.
  • BLS.

  • Academic medical center experience.
  • Experience in the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Experience using Epic EMR.
  • Other licenses and/or certifications specific to position.

  • Hours (2) 12 hour shifts 7:00pm - 7:30am (or (3) 12 hour shifts 7:00pm - 7:30am) in a 4 week block over 52 weeks per year.
  • Frequent interruptions in an evironment of frequent change and fluctuations.
  • May be exposed to excessive auditory and visual stimulation.
  • May be required to attend out of town conferences according to hospital travel and reimbursement policies.
  • May be exposed to body fluids, tissue, possible radiation exposure, and infectious processes.
  • Subject to computer work for several hours, as needed.
  • Able to use all appropriate patient care equipment and office equipment within work area.
