What is an API Integration?

An API Integration job involves connecting different software systems using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to enable seamless data exchange and functionality. Professionals in this role develop, maintain, and troubleshoot API connections to ensure smooth communication between applications. They work with various APIs, authentication methods, and data formats like JSON or XML. Their responsibilities may include designing API workflows, optimizing performance, and ensuring security compliance.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in API Integration?

A typical day as an API Integration specialist involves collaborating with developers, project managers, and stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into technical specifications. You might spend your time building, testing, and troubleshooting connections between different software systems using APIs, as well as monitoring existing integrations for performance and reliability. Daily tasks often include reviewing API documentation, writing scripts or code, managing tickets, and coordinating with external partners to resolve integration issues. You'll also participate in team meetings to discuss project progress and identify any potential challenges. This role offers a dynamic, problem-solving environment where attention to detail and clear communication are key to success.

API Integration Lead – This is a remote opportunity
The API Integration Lead will serve as the senior hands-on technical lead for enterprise API management and integration, with particular responsibility for the existing WSO2 API Manager environment. This is not primarily an application developer position. OJP currently operates a WSO2 API Manager product suite consisting of six modules hosted across approximately 40 Linux servers supporting Development, Test, UAT, Staging, and Production. The environment is used to publish APIs, provide custom API integration, guide other product teams, monitor data throughput, and implement rate limiting.
Requirements:
  • 8+ years in API integration, middleware, integration engineering, platform engineering, or closely related enterprise integration work.
  • 5 years of relevant DevOps/data-integration experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on WSO2 API Manager experience strongly preferred.
  • Must have personally administered, engineered, or supported a production enterprise API-management/gateway platform.
  • Perform design, publication, versioning, policy enforcement, deployment/promotion, monitoring, deprecation, troubleshooting, and production support.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of OAuth2, SAML, TLS/SSL, authentication, authorization, certificates/secrets, and API security policies. SCIM experience is strongly preferred because OJP specifically identifies SAML, OAuth2, and SCIM.
  • Strong REST API and microservices integration experience; ability to advise application teams on API contracts, integration patterns, error handling, and interoperability.
  • Hands-on experience implementing throttling, quotas, rate limiting, throughput controls, or equivalent gateway policies.
  • Production troubleshooting and administration experience in Linux-hosted API or middleware environments.
  • Experience incorporating APIs/gateway configuration into automated pipelines using Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Git/GitHub, or similar tools.
  • AWS/AWS GovCloud, Azure, Docker, ECS, Kubernetes/OpenShift, or comparable container/cloud experience preferred.
  • Experience analyzing application/gateway logs, transaction failures, latency, throughput, availability, and security events. Splunk experience is particularly useful in OJP’s environment.
  • Ability to produce technical designs, API standards, deployment instructions, operating procedures, troubleshooting guides, and integration guidance for other engineering teams.
  • Candidate must have supported live production APIs/platforms. Pure development experience is insufficient.
Certifications:
WSO2 API Manager training or certification is valuable, but direct production experience is more important. Relevant API-management credentials, Azure DevOps/GitHub training, AWS/Azure certifications, Kubernetes/container certifications, and security credentials are favorable. Appropriate certifications or training in areas such as API management, Azure DevOps, and GitHub rather than mandating one specific certification.
