What does an animator do?

Animators create moving images for television, movies, video games, websites, multimedia platforms, and other forms of media. As an animator, your duties are to design illustrations to match characters and settings described in scripts. Sometimes an animator comes up with a new character before developing a script or role for it, while other times animators work closely with writers to collaborate on character development. After the creation stage, your responsibilities shift to rendering the image for whatever medium you work in, such as feature-length computer animated films or short graphic descriptions of news for an online magazine.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an animator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Animator, you need strong artistic ability, a solid understanding of motion, timing, and storytelling, often supported by a degree in animation or a related field. Proficiency in animation software such as Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Maya, or Blender, and familiarity with digital drawing tablets are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help animators collaborate well and bring ideas to life. These skills are vital for producing high-quality, engaging animations that meet project goals and client expectations.

What are some typical challenges animators face when working on collaborative projects?

Animators often collaborate with teams of artists, directors, and sound designers, which can present challenges such as maintaining consistent visual style and meeting tight production deadlines. Communication is key, as feedback and revisions are frequent, requiring adaptability and strong interpersonal skills. Additionally, animators need to be proficient in various software and workflows to ensure their work integrates smoothly with other departments, such as modeling or lighting. Balancing creative vision with technical requirements is a common aspect of the role.

Job description

Device Brand Studio, an internal agency within the Devices group at Amazon, is seeking a talented Motion Designer to help bring new Amazon offerings to market, products, services, and features within our devices portfolio. The Motion Designer will own motion and film craft for product lines and campaigns within Amazon Devices, from concept through final delivery, including new-to-world and new-to-Amazon launches.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in motion design, animation, and editorial craft, and the ability to take a brand story and translate it into work that holds up in a keynote, a 15-second cutdown, and a social loop without losing the idea. You will work closely with creative directors, ACDs, and copywriters to develop motion concepts, storyboard and previs ideas, then execute polished final work, iterating based on feedback and factoring in timeline and platform requirements. You should have working knowledge of brand guidelines and creative briefs at a top consumer-facing brand like Amazon.
Because the work is varied, fast-paced, and often tied to hard launch dates, you should have strong technical craft and the ability to manage multiple concurrent motion projects at different stages of production. You will partner with creative directors, art directors, editors, sound designers, and production to deliver motion work across campaign film, keynote content, product detail pages, and social.
This role is for a strong motion craft lead with hands-on production experience, who can take a concept from styleframe to final cut and present work clearly to creative leads and stakeholders.
Key job responsibilities
• Own motion design and animation execution for assigned campaigns and launch moments, from concept through final delivery
• Develop styleframes, storyboards, and animation concepts that translate brand strategy into motion
• Edit and finish film and motion content for keynote, campaign, and social deliverables
• Partner with creative directors and art directors to develop and pitch motion concepts and territories
• Collaborate with editors, sound designers, and production to keep motion work on schedule and technically sound
• Give feedback and technical guidance to junior motion designers on the team
• Maintain technical and craft standards across motion deliverables as formats and platforms evolve
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 8+ years of design experience
- Have an available online portfolio
- Experience art directing motion designers, illustrators, writers and content creators
- Experience partnering with technical partners for design implementation
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of marketing fundamentals and ability to implement them to create dynamic advertising solutions
- Knowledge of typographic and brand design principles
