Description
The Shelter Manager oversees the daily operations of the animal shelter, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, staff leadership, customer service, safety, and operational efficiency. This position provides direct supervision to shelter staff and volunteers while supporting the organization's mission through compassionate animal care, effective team management, community engagement, and adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
The Shelter Manager works collaboratively with leadership, veterinary partners, volunteers, foster coordinators, and community organizations to maintain a safe, humane, and professional shelter environment while ensuring the efficient movement of animals through intake, care, adoption, transfer, and other placement programs.
Examples of Duties
  • Supervise, train, coach, schedule, and evaluate shelter staff and volunteers.
  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure staff understand and support the organization's mission, values, and Standard Operating Procedure
    • Promote a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.
    • Address employee concerns, performance issues, and disciplinary matters in accordance with organizational policies.
    • Ensure appropriate staffing coverage and coordinate scheduling adjustments for absences, emergencies, and operational needs.
      • Conduct staff meetings, trainings, and ongoing development initiatives.
      • Maintain accurate employee documentation and communicate personnel matters with executive leadership as appropriate.
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the shelter and ensure efficient workflow throughout all departments.
    • Manage animal intake, wait lists, adoptions, transfers, foster placements, and transport coordination.
    • Participate in strategic planning, policy development, and continuous process improvement initiatives.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and organizational regulations related to shelter operations and animal welfare.

Typical Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership or management experience preferred.
  • Experience in animal welfare, shelter operations, nonprofit management, customer service, healthcare, or related fields strongly preferred.
