Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director Civil Engineering Design, the position is primarily an office-based task, which will be based out of either 30th Street Station, Philadelphia, Pa. or Providence MOW Base, Providence, RI. The Sr. Principal Engineer provides technical direction and oversight of field/track survey and right-of-way mapping work on all AMTRAK owned or maintained properties. They manage staff responsible for field crew scheduling, technical data calculations and review of third-party submissions of work on, or adjacent to the Amtrak right-of-way.

Essential Functions
  • Oversee and provide direction for all land/track surveying matters as design progresses from concept through delivery on multiple projects in parallel.
  • Establishing safety as an integral and continuous part of all work, motivating personnel to be proactive in improving safe, efficient and effective methods for all activities and working to ensure the safety of the employees, passengers and the general public.
  • Ensure project compliance with Amtrak policies, standards and guidelines and all applicable federal/state/regional regulatory agency requirements. Ensure alignment with project scope and limitations.
  • Recommends the use of and directs the activities of outside contract surveyors based upon project needs and the professional expertise required for meeting those needs.
  • Oversee the purchase, maintenance and storage of surveying equipment and supplies ensuring that the equipment is in good repair and properly calibrated.
  • Represents AMTRAK on third-party contracts related to surveying and mapping with outside agencies, municipalities and other parties; performs technical reviews of third-party submittals to ensure compliance with AMTRAK standards.
  • Provide mentorship and delegate experience-appropriate tasks to direct and indirect reports.
  • Prioritize safety and security, sustainability, resiliency and customer experience. 
  • Identify, document, and implement Amtrak's requirements into projects. Mitigate disagreement through research, partnering and consensus. 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Professional Land Surveyor license in at least one (1) state along AMTRAK Northeast Corridor (NEC).
  • Must become qualified in AMTRAK RWP, AMT II and other required training.
  • Candidate must possess a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Demonstrated expertise in delivering solutions which integrate the most up-to-date standards and technologies into railroad transportation scenarios.
  • Working knowledge of rail infrastructure, including overhead catenary systems, communications and signals and track.
  • The incumbent shall be capable of building rapport with our customers through the utilization of graphic, verbal, written, and other forms of communication. 
  • Considerable knowledge of modern surveying equipment such as GNSS observation equipment and associated processing software, electronic total stations, laser scanners, automatic/digital levels and electronic data collectors.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365, as well as the ability to be trained and become familiar with Amtrak's requirements, systems, and software.
  • Provide guidance and inter-discipline coordination with Amtrak Track Design, Amtrak Standards, other engineering disciplines, Amtrak Production and Division forces in support of those activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required or equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Plus
  • 9 years of prior relevant work experience required
  • 10+ years of relevant experience preferred
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Surveying or Civil Engineering and at least 10 years relavent, progressive work experience or at least 15 years of relevant, progressive work experience in land surveyring. 
  • 10+ years' experience in geomatics, land surveying and/or civil engineering.
  • Experience in using Leica Infinity, AutoCAD or Microstation CADD software and Office 365.

Work Environment

  • 4 days in office, 1 day remote.
  • Nights and weekends as needed.

The salary/hourly range is $149,400.00 - $193,644.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
