Job description

Public Safety Officer

Mount Mercy University is seeking a dedicated and service-oriented Public Safety Officer to join our Public Safety team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Public Safety Officers work a non-standard schedule and assist in providing 24/7 campus safety coverage. This position would cover hours from 4 PM to Midnight, Saturday through Wednesday. The starting pay is $16.50 an hour.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative professional who demonstrates sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to serving a diverse university community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patrol campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds to help ensure the safety and security of people and property.
  • Enforce campus security and parking policies, including building access and key control procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies, provide assistance to injured individuals, and coordinate with local emergency responders when necessary.
  • Conduct investigations, complete incident reports, and maintain security records.
  • Monitor security and life-safety systems, including fire, intrusion, and access control systems.
  • Perform routine inspections of campus safety equipment and security measures.
  • Provide security escorts, support campus events, and collaborate with departments on safety initiatives and emergency preparedness.
  • Participate in safety training, emergency drills, and other professional development activities.
  • Deliver excellent customer service while maintaining a visible, approachable presence on campus.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other non-traditional hours as needed.

Preferred

  • Associate degree.
  • Previous experience in campus safety, security, law enforcement, military service, emergency response, or related field.
