The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine invites applications for Medical Physicist for a faculty appointment within the Department of Radiology.
A successful Ph.D. candidate will be appointed on the non-tenure clinical track at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor, and a successful M.S.-prepared candidate will be appointed as a faculty instructor. The position is a 1.0 FTE.
The Diagnostic Medical Physicist will support imaging and the hospital departments by performing evaluations of a wide variety of imaging systems in all modalities to ensure compliance with state regulations, accreditation requirements, and relevant practice standards. The physicist will also evaluate and characterize image quality to ensure imaging equipment is operating at optimal performance levels, and provide consultation to clients regarding facility design, shielding requirements, assessment of supplemental shielding, patient and occupational radiation exposure, etc. This role will provide support to MCU, MCD, MCNL, and IRL. Additional responsibilities of the Medical Physicist include: Protection of the patient and others from potentially harmful or excessive radiation; assists in the establishment of adequate protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry; the measurement and characterization of radiation; the determination of delivered dose; advancement of procedures necessary to ensure image quality; development and direction of quality assurance programs, and assistance to other health professionals in optimizing the balance between the beneficial and deleterious effects of radiation; and compliance with state and federal regulations.

About the Department of Radiology:
The Department of Radiology includes 69 staff physicians, 22 PhD researchers, 27 fellows, and 36 residents. The Radiology enterprise expands across four campuses throughout the Iowa City corridor. We also serve Stead Family Children's Hospital located at the Medical Center University campus, as well as several UI urgent cares, clinics, and additional affiliates. Our enterprise operates 12 clinical CT scanners including two Alpha photon-counting scanners , 14 clinical MR scanners including four 3T machines, and the first Siemens Free.Max MR to be housed in an Emergency Department in the United States. We operate three time-of-flight (TOF) PET/CT systems and anticipate receiving a Siemens PET/MR in fall 2025.
The Department of Radiology plays an integral role in the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging (IIBI), a collaboration of nearly 100 faculty and staff within the colleges of Engineering, Medicine, and Liberal Arts (https://www.iibi.uiowa.edu). The facility includes 3T, 3T head only and 7T research scanners.
The Department of Radiology consistently ranks highly in the Blue Ridge Institute NIH rankings, having received over $10 million in NIH funding last year. We host nine research labs and have 37 active phase I and phase II clinical trials.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is a state-of-the-art 800 bed tertiary care center that annually admits more than 36,000 patients for in-patient hospital care. In fiscal year 2017, we received nearly 60,000 emergency department visits. We are a Level 1 certified Trauma Center, the only one in Eastern Iowa. We represent more than 200 outpatient clinics and care areas and accommodated just over one million clinic visits at our main campus and community and outreach clinics. UIHC is HIMSS level 7 certified in both inpatient and outpatient care as well as a 2014 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award Recipient.
UIHC is Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center and regional referral center. The UIHC Stead Family Children's Hospital opened in 2017and is Iowa's only comprehensive children's hospital. It is listed as one of the U.S. News & World Report 2020-21 Best Children's Hospitals.
Education Requirement:Must meet one of the outlined options for required qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics or equivalent and either: (i) board certification in radiotherapy physics by the American Board of Radiology (or equivalent); (ii) eligible to take Part 2 or Part 3 of the American Board of Radiology therapeutic medical physics board exam within 1 year of starting the position, or (iii) eligible for the American Board of Radiology's International Medical Physics Graduates Alternate Pathway (IMPGAP) immediately upon starting the position (https://www.theabr.org/medical-physics/initial-certification/international-medical-graduates).
- Applicants intending to obtain board certification through the American Board of Radiology's International Medical Physics Graduates Alternative Pathway must submit the following with their application as appended pages to their cover letter:
- Transcripts indicating their medical physics degree is at least equivalent to a Master of Science degree in medical physics from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program (See Section 8 of https://www.campep.org/GraduateStandards.pdf)
- Credentials demonstrating the candidate is a qualified medical physicist in their country of origin
- Demonstration of employment of at least one year as a qualified medical physicist in their country of origin, and;
- Scanned passport page demonstrating citizenship.
- A post-graduate degree in an appropriate field of Physics or Engineering
- At least one year of experience as a clinical medical physicist or completion of a CAMPEP-accredited residency program
- Experience with clinical and classroom teaching
- Experience with high-dose-rate brachytherapy
- Experience with MR-guided radiation therapy
- Experience with stereotactic radiosurgery
- PhD degree
- A track record of successfully executing complex clinical projects such as commissioning a linear accelerator, treatment planning system, or new clinical service
- Academic productivity through publications and/or funded grants in the physics, engineering, and/or clinical spaces
- Certification by the American Board of Radiology (or equivalent) in therapeutic medical physics or under 1 year pathway to board certification from start date
