What is an AI paralegal?

AI paralegals are advanced software tools or systems that use artificial intelligence to assist with legal tasks traditionally performed by human paralegals. They can help with document review, legal research, drafting contracts, managing case files, and automating repetitive processes. AI paralegals are designed to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize human error in legal workflows. While they cannot replace licensed attorneys, they support legal teams by handling routine tasks and allowing professionals to focus on more complex legal work.

How does an AI paralegal typically interact with attorneys and other legal professionals?

An AI Paralegal works closely with attorneys by using advanced AI tools to conduct legal research, draft documents, and manage case files efficiently. Daily interactions often involve reviewing case requirements with attorneys, updating them on research findings, and ensuring deadlines are met. Collaboration with legal assistants, IT specialists, and sometimes clients is common, especially when integrating AI-driven solutions into workflows. This role requires strong communication skills to bridge the gap between legal expertise and technology, ensuring that AI outputs meet the firm's standards and client needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI paralegal?

To thrive as an AI Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of legal research, document review, and case management, often supported by a paralegal certificate or degree. Familiarity with legal technology platforms, AI-powered document analysis tools, and case management software is increasingly essential. These skills and qualities enable AI Paralegals to efficiently support legal teams, ensure accuracy, and adapt to evolving legal tech environments.

You will review, analyze, and interpret complex legal materials, provide high-quality written feedback, and support AI-driven workflows that enhance how legal professionals work. This is a fully remote, project-based consulting engagement with flexible scheduling and a weekly commitment of approximately 30-40 hours.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and apply established legal research methodologies to a wide range of subject areas.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret contracts, legal documents, and regulatory materials with a high level of accuracy.
  • Perform detailed document review, including large volumes of legal documentation, to identify inaccuracies, inconsistencies, and potential legal risks.
  • Support litigation-related workflows, including litigation support, discovery and eDiscovery tasks, and review of litigation documentation.
  • Draft, refine, and edit legal content, including summaries, analyses, and written explanations of legal issues and findings.
  • Interpret case law and statutes, and clearly explain legal concepts, reasoning, and outcomes in writing.
  • Provide structured written feedback on complex legal content to support AI training, data annotation, and quality assurance processes.
  • Evaluate complex legal materials and apply strong judgment and critical thinking to assess relevance, risk, and consistency.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, corporate legal departments, compliance teams, and legal operations functions in a support capacity.
  • Leverage legal research platforms and document management systems to organize, track, and manage legal materials efficiently.
  • Adapt to AI-driven workflows and emerging technologies, incorporating new tools and processes into daily work.
  • Work independently in a remote, deadline-driven environment while maintaining high standards of quality and attention to detail.
  • Incorporate feedback into work products, revise analyses and documentation as needed, and continuously refine written outputs.
  • Contribute legal expertise to help shape how AI supports legal research, contract management, compliance, and litigation support in the future.

Essential Skills
  • 7+ years of paralegal, legal analyst, contract management, legal operations, litigation support, compliance, or related legal experience.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience supporting legal research, document review, contracts, litigation, compliance, or regulatory matters.
  • Extensive legal drafting and document review experience.
  • Strong legal research skills, including case law analysis and statutory interpretation.
  • Proven ability to interpret legal concepts and explain findings clearly in writing.
  • Experience supporting attorneys, corporate legal departments, compliance teams, or legal operations functions.
  • Demonstrated contract review and interpretation experience.
  • Familiarity with litigation processes and legal documentation standards.
  • Advanced legal writing, proofreading, and analytical abilities.
  • Highly detailed written communication skills and strong editing capabilities.
  • Proficiency with legal research platforms and document management systems.
  • Ability to evaluate complex content and provide structured written feedback.
  • Experience working independently in a remote environment and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong judgment, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Availability to commit approximately 30-40 hours per week for the full engagement.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 7-10 years of progressive legal experience, ideally in roles such as paralegal, legal analyst, contracts specialist, litigation paralegal, or legal operations professional.
  • Experience working within law firms, corporate legal departments, compliance teams, or government agencies.
  • Experience reviewing large volumes of legal documentation with high accuracy and consistency.
  • Experience in corporate governance, risk management, regulatory analysis, or regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with due diligence, contract management, discovery support, and legal documentation quality assurance.
  • Comfort working with AI tools, AI training workflows, data annotation, and large language models (LLMs).
  • Tech-savvy mindset and ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly.
  • Comfortable receiving feedback and revising work products based on review and quality standards.
  • Experience supporting compliance or risk management functions in addition to traditional legal support.
  • Familiarity with eDiscovery tools and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a flexible, project-based consulting environment.

Work Environment
  • This position operates in a fully remote work environment, allowing you to perform all responsibilities from your chosen location.
  • The engagement is project-based, offering a consulting structure with a preferred commitment of 30-40+ hours per week.
  • The schedule is flexible, enabling you to align your working hours with project needs while maintaining work-life balance.
  • You will use legal research platforms, document management systems, and AI-driven tools as part of your daily workflow, collaborating virtually with legal and compliance professionals.
