What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Agent Based Modeling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Agent Based Modeling role, a strong background in computational modeling, mathematics, and systems analysis is typically required, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with simulation tools such as NetLogo, AnyLogic, or Repast, as well as programming languages like Python or Java, is highly valuable. Effective communication, critical thinking, and strong collaboration skills help professionals explain complex models to stakeholders and work within multidisciplinary teams. These qualities are crucial for accurately simulating real-world systems, delivering actionable insights, and driving informed decision-making in various industries.

What are some typical challenges faced in an Agent Based Modeling position?

A common challenge in Agent Based Modeling is accurately representing complex, real-world systems with diverse and dynamic agents while balancing computational resources and model simplicity. Professionals in this role often need to validate and calibrate their models with limited or imperfect data, requiring both technical skill and creativity. Additionally, effectively communicating modeling results to non-technical stakeholders and integrating feedback into iterations is a key part of the job. Overcoming these challenges provides rewarding opportunities to contribute to innovative solutions across areas like finance, healthcare, logistics, or social sciences.

What is an Agent-Based Modeling job?

An Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) job involves developing and implementing simulations that model the interactions of autonomous agents within a system. These roles are common in fields like economics, epidemiology, traffic modeling, and artificial intelligence. Professionals in this role use programming and mathematical models to analyze complex systems and predict emergent behaviors. Job description

Agentic AI Engineer - AWS Professional Services
Location: Chantilly, VA (preferred)
Work Type: Onsite / Hybrid
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship required
Clearance: Active Top Secret/SCI clearance required
The Opportunity
Strategic Business Systems (SBS) is expanding our AWS Professional Services team to support a high-priority, mission-critical national security program. We've already begun standing up core infrastructure and are now scaling the team to deliver additional capabilities in a fast-moving, high-visibility environment.
This is a hands-on role where you'll work directly with AWS teams and customer stakeholders to design, build, and deploy secure, scalable solutions. The work supports critical national security objectives and spans AI-driven applications, foundational cloud infrastructure, and secure data movement across classification boundaries.
You'll contribute to building AWS environments in classified regions, enabling agent-based AI workflows, and supporting cross-domain data pipelines that move data securely between networks.
If you enjoy building real systems, solving hard problems, and working on efforts that have direct impact, this is a strong fit.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Design, build, and deploy cloud-native applications in AWS
  • Develop agent-based AI workflows for federated data environments
  • Build serverless architectures using AWS Lambda, Step Functions, and APIs
  • Support the design and implementation of AWS Landing Zones in classified regions, including account structure, IAM, networking, and guardrails
  • Implement secure data access patterns across distributed systems
  • Design and integrate cross-domain (low-to-high) data pipelines into AWS environments
  • Work with CDS/diode technologies to enable secure data transfer across classification boundaries
  • Integrate data pipelines with AWS services (S3, OpenSearch, etc.) and enterprise systems
  • Participate in architecture discussions and technical decision-making
  • Evaluate and improve LLM-driven workflows in operational environments

What We're Looking For
Core Development + AWS
  • Strong development background (Python, Java, or similar)
  • Experience building applications in AWS
  • Familiarity with serverless architectures (Lambda, Step Functions)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern development practices

AI / Data / Agentic Workflows
  • Experience or exposure to LLM-based systems (RAG, prompt engineering, context handling)
  • Familiarity with agent frameworks (Bedrock Agents, Strands, or similar)
  • Understanding of federated data integration patterns

Cloud Infrastructure (Landing Zones)
  • Experience or exposure to building AWS environments from the ground up
  • Understanding of multi-account architectures, IAM, VPC design, and guardrails
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.)
  • Exposure to AWS GovCloud or classified regions (preferred)

Cross Domain / CDS
  • Experience or familiarity with Cross Domain Solutions (CDS) or secure data transfer systems
  • Understanding of low-to-high data flow constraints and validation requirements
  • Exposure to data diode architectures or guard technologies (preferred)

Data & Search
  • Working knowledge of OpenSearch or similar platforms
  • Basic understanding of SQL, Lucene, or similar query languages

Security
  • Experience with ABAC or modern access control models
  • Comfortable working in secure, regulated environments

Why SBS

You'll be part of a team that:
  • Works directly with AWS on meaningful, mission-driven programs
  • Operates in high-impact national security environments
  • Builds across AI, cloud infrastructure, and secure data movement
  • Values engineers who can execute and deliver
