As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for aerospace electroplating in the United States is $22.96, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $25.48 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is aerospace electroplating?

Aerospace electroplating is a specialized process where a thin layer of metal—such as nickel, chrome, or cadmium—is deposited onto aerospace parts using an electric current. This technique improves the durability, corrosion resistance, and performance of metal components used in aircraft and spacecraft. Electroplating also helps to restore worn parts, enhance electrical conductivity, and meet strict industry specifications for safety and reliability. The process is critical for maintaining the integrity and longevity of aerospace equipment operating in harsh environments.

What is the difference between Aerospace Electroplating vs Aerospace Surface Finishing?

AspectAerospace ElectroplatingAerospace Surface Finishing
CertificationsAS9100, NADCAPAS9100, NADCAP
Work EnvironmentManufacturing facilities, clean roomsManufacturing facilities, clean rooms
Industry UsageApplying metal coatings to partsFinal surface treatments and polishing
Job FocusElectrochemical deposition of metalsSurface preparation, polishing, and finishing

While both Aerospace Electroplating and Aerospace Surface Finishing involve enhancing aerospace components, electroplating focuses on applying metal coatings through electrochemical processes, whereas surface finishing emphasizes polishing and final surface treatments. Both roles require similar certifications and work environments, but their specific tasks differ, making each essential for aerospace manufacturing quality and performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Aerospace Electroplating Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aerospace Electroplating Technician, strong knowledge of metal finishing processes, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent with relevant vocational training are essential. Familiarity with plating equipment, chemical handling protocols, and quality control systems—often supported by certifications like NADCAP—is typically required. Precision, problem-solving abilities, and strict adherence to safety procedures distinguish top performers in this role. Mastery of these skills ensures the production of high-quality, corrosion-resistant aerospace components that meet rigorous industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced in an Aerospace Electroplating role, and how can they be addressed?

Aerospace Electroplating professionals often encounter challenges related to maintaining strict quality and safety standards, as the components they treat must meet rigorous aerospace specifications. Managing hazardous chemicals and ensuring proper waste disposal are also critical aspects of the job. To address these challenges, it's important to stay current with industry regulations, follow detailed process documentation, and participate in regular safety and compliance trainings. Close collaboration with quality assurance teams and engineers helps ensure that all plated parts meet required tolerances and performance criteria.
