What is advertising space sales?

Advertising space sales involve selling advertising opportunities to businesses or individuals who want to promote their products, services, or brands. This can include print media (like magazines and newspapers), digital platforms (such as websites and social media), outdoor billboards, and broadcast media. Professionals in this field identify potential clients, present advertising options, negotiate pricing, and manage relationships to help clients reach their target audience effectively. The role requires strong communication, negotiation, and sales skills, as well as an understanding of marketing trends and media platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in advertising space sales?

To thrive in Advertising Space Sales, you need strong sales acumen, negotiation skills, and a solid understanding of media markets, often supported by a degree in marketing, business, or communications. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, digital advertising platforms, and sales analytics tools is typically required. Excellent communication, persistence, and relationship-building skills help professionals connect with clients and close deals. These competencies are crucial for meeting sales targets, maximizing revenue, and building lasting client partnerships in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced in advertising space sales, and how can professionals overcome them?

One common challenge in Advertising Space Sales is dealing with high competition and the need to consistently meet sales targets. Professionals often have to differentiate their offerings and build strong relationships with clients to secure ongoing business. Staying up-to-date on market trends and client industries can help tailor pitches more effectively. Additionally, collaborating closely with creative and account management teams ensures client expectations are met and campaigns are successful, which can lead to repeat business and referrals.

Job description

Job Overview

The Rye Record is looking for a dynamic, self‑motivated Ad Sales Director to lead our print and digital advertising sales.

This is a highly visible local role. Because networking and face‑to‑face relationships are the heartbeat of local media, applicants must live in or near Westchester County (the closer to Rye, the better!) to easily connect with our business community.

Key Responsibilities

As our Ad Sales Director, you will drive revenue by connecting area businesses with our highly engaged audience. Your day‑to‑day role will include:

  • Local Networking & Relationship Building: Getting out into downtown Rye and surrounding Westchester communities to build strong personal connections with local business owners, service providers, and regional brands.
  • Consultative B2B Sales: Pitching custom print and digital advertising packages, helping local businesses see the immense value of aligning with our trusted brand.
  • Omnichannel Selling: Actively selling advertising space across our biweekly print newspaper, our high‑traffic website (ryerecord.com), our weekly email newsletters, and our podcast/social channels.
  • Account Management: Maintaining and growing relationships with our existing base of high‑value local advertisers—from real estate and healthcare to retail and wealth management.
  • Representing the Brand: Acting as a key ambassador for The Rye Record at local events and business association meetings.
Who You Are
  • A Local Connector: You live in or very close to Westchester County. You love the area and want to be a visible part of the community.
  • A Proven Sales Closer: You have excellent communication skills, a friendly demeanor, and the persistence required to pitch, follow up, and close ad deals.
  • Digital Savvy: You understand the modern media landscape. You are just as comfortable explaining web banners, newsletter takeovers, and digital metrics as you are selling half‑page print ads.
  • Self‑Driven: You enjoy the freedom of managing your own book of business and are motivated by hitting sales targets.
Why Sell For The Rye Record?

We aren’t just another local paper—we are a trusted community institution. When you sell for us, you are representing an award‑winning, high‑quality media brand with unmatched local reach and incredible selling points:

  • Award‑Winning Excellence: We were named the 2025 New York Press Association Newspaper of the Year, winning multiple awards across our print edition, website, email newsletters, and podcasts.
  • Deep Local Ties: Our print edition is mailed directly to every single home in Rye (10580), Purchase (10577), and select high‑net‑worth areas in Harrison. We also hand‑deliver to downtown businesses, City Hall, libraries, and local schools. In total, we have a 10,000+ print distribution.
  • Thriving Digital Assets: This role is just as focused on our digital growth as our print legacy. You will be selling across our entire ecosystem, including:
  • ryerecord.com: Averaging over 71.4K page views and 41.5K active users per month.
  • “On the Record” and “Between the Lines” weekly email newsletters: Boasting an incredible 75+% open rate and 10+% click‑through rate.
  • Social Media & Podcasts: Engaging a rapidly growing, highly loyal local audience via Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Unmatched Demographics: We connect businesses to an extraordinarily affluent audience. The local median household income is $237,727 (compared to the $81,604 U.S. average), with an average home value of $2.15 million.
