What is an advertising representative?

Advertising Representatives are professionals who act as the link between advertising agencies or media companies and their clients. They are responsible for selling advertising space or time, understanding client needs, and helping to develop effective advertising campaigns. Their duties often include prospecting new clients, presenting advertising options, negotiating contracts, and ensuring campaigns are executed as planned. Strong communication and sales skills are essential for this role, as well as up-to-date knowledge of marketing trends and media platforms.

What are some common challenges faced by advertising representatives when managing multiple client accounts?

Advertising Representatives often juggle several client accounts simultaneously, which can present challenges such as balancing competing deadlines, adapting to different client expectations, and ensuring consistent communication. Staying organized and prioritizing tasks is crucial to delivering high-quality campaigns on time. Representatives must also be proactive in managing feedback and revisions, often requiring strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate closely with creative teams, media buyers, and clients to achieve campaign objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advertising representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advertising Representative, you need strong sales abilities, a solid understanding of marketing principles, and typically a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, digital advertising platforms, and data analytics tools is often required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, creativity, and persuasive communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for building client relationships, crafting effective ad campaigns, and achieving sales targets in a competitive market.

Full-time, Contractor

Job description

Turn your love of community into a career.

Best Version Media is looking for a driven, community-minded sales professional to join us as an Advertising Sales Representative.

About Best Version Media

Founded in 2007, Best Version Media (BVM) has spent nearly two decades bringing North American communities together one person, one home, one business at a time. Today, BVM publishes over 1,300 local magazines and reaches billions of digital impressions across North America, helping thousands of local business owners grow.

What You'll Do

This is a field-based, in-person sales role. You'll build your own book of business in your local territory, on a schedule you control, selling advertising placements across BVM's local print magazine and companion digital, social, and website products.

  • Consult: Meet face-to-face with standout local business owners to showcase what makes their community great.
  • Strategize: Build powerful, multi-channel branding programs using our media suite, print, digital, social, websites, and reputation management.
  • Scale: Leverage our proven training and time-tested sales system to grow your own book of business, building community engagement that pays you and your community for years to come.

What You'll Earn

This is a 1099 independent contractor role with no base salary or draw (full commission). Representatives earn a recurring commission on sales, with commission rates generally ranging from 70-80% based on monthly sales volume and performance relative to the baseline* cost structure. Bonuses are available during start-up and on an ongoing basis.

*Baseline is the back-end cost associated with the magazine & digital product's cost to produce, distribute, bill clients, etc, and does not come out of the representative's pocket.

What You Bring

  • Sales Acumen: A drive to help local businesses grow through the art of advertising sales, strong communication, negotiation, and closing skills. Experience with digital or print advertising is a plus, but the right attitude matters most; we provide the training.
  • Growth Mindset: A resilient, never-give-up attitude paired with a proactive approach to learning and continuous self-improvement.
  • Community Focus: A genuine interest in building and nurturing relationships with local business owners, putting their success first.

Why Best Version Media?

  • Support: Comprehensive training and ongoing professional support, we're a community in ourselves.
  • Proven Success: Nearly 20 years serving local communities, with over 1,300 publications and a reach of billions of digital impressions across North America.
  • Culture & Rewards: Our why is simple: bring communities closer, one relationship at a time, and we celebrate the people who make that happen.
    • Earn incentive trips, awards, and friendly contests along the way, all within a flexible schedule built to keep you present for what matters most: friends and family.
