What does an advertising designer do?

An advertising designer creates ad campaigns. Their duties involve increasing sales or awareness of a featured product or service. To do this, a designer creates a design for a media or press campaign. An advertising designer typically works as a graphic artist, working on layouts and designing ads. Someone with experience in this position may become an art director, who oversees communication among design staff and coordinates project details, or a creative director, who manages all parts of the creative department. Qualifications to become an advertising designer include a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advertising designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advertising Designer, you need strong graphic design skills, a solid understanding of branding, and typically a degree in graphic design or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is essential, and familiarity with digital advertising platforms is often advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams. These competencies ensure the creation of visually compelling advertisements that effectively convey brand messages and drive engagement.

How does an advertising designer typically collaborate with copywriters and marketing teams during a campaign?

Advertising Designers frequently work alongside copywriters and marketing teams to create cohesive and engaging campaigns. They participate in brainstorming sessions, share visual concepts, and incorporate feedback to ensure that the design aligns with the campaign’s messaging and marketing goals. Regular communication and iterative revisions are common, as the designer adjusts layouts, imagery, and branding elements to complement the written content and overall strategy. This collaborative process helps ensure the final advertisement effectively resonates with the target audience.

We believe in what we do-and place trust in our employees to deliver our vision.

Working at Alberta Blue Cross means having a career where you'll be recognized for your contributions. We value diversity, encourage our team members to maintain a healthy work-life balance and provide opportunities for career growth.

OVERVIEW:

We're seeking a talented and creative Graphic Designer to join our team for a 12 month temporary opportunity. Our brand and creative team is launching an exciting new brand platform, with room for invention, experimentation and thoughtful craftsmanship. As a Graphic Designer, you will play a key role in elevating our visual design, strengthening our brand presence and helping shape compelling stories that resonate with our audiences.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • You are a strategic visual storyteller who brings both conceptual thinking and refined craft to every project.

  • You excel at translating ideas, data and insights into meaningful visual narratives.

  • You understand how design shifts across platforms - from print to web to social to video - and how audience, medium and message interact.

  • You are comfortable presenting work, articulating rationale and participating in critique.

  • You keep a pulse on emerging trends, tools and technologies and apply them when appropriate.

  • You contribute to an environment of creativity, collaboration and high standards - and are able to coach and support more junior designers.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Design creative concepts and multi-platform visual design across campaigns and initiatives.

  • Create and enhance sophisticated visual assets, including illustrations, graphics, page layouts.

  • Translate complex ideas, messages and data into clear, engaging and visually compelling communication.

  • Manage multiple, deadline-driven projects while maintaining a high standard of quality, brand consistency and craft.

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in graphic design, visual communications, or a related field.

  • 3-5 years of design experience, ideally within brand, marketing, advertising agency or in-house creative teams.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills.

  • A high level of professionalism, resourcefulness, and creativity.

  • A diverse portfolio demonstrating a passion for your work. Preference will be given to those candidates that have a portfolio demonstrating design agility across a variety of media.

  • Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat), and Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint and Word).

  • Experience working with print suppliers, providing final files and running preflight.

  • A high level of professionalism, resourcefulness, and ownership of craft.

ADVANTANGES:

  • Targeted yearly compensation includes a competitive base salary plus incentive, based on predetermined targets.

  • Hybrid working arrangement: you may work from home, come into the office when required and sometimes travel to client meetings or events.

  • Our downtown Edmonton office includes access to a world-class top-floor gym in our summit wellness centre.

  • Flexible, impactful benefits-right from the source!

  • The chance to make a positive difference in people's lives.

This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected.
