What is advanced process control?

Advanced Process Control (APC) refers to a collection of techniques and technologies used to optimize the performance of industrial processes beyond what is possible with basic process control methods. APC systems use complex algorithms, such as model predictive control and multivariable control, to improve process efficiency, product quality, and safety. They are commonly used in industries like oil and gas, chemicals, and manufacturing to reduce variability, increase throughput, and minimize energy consumption. Implementing APC can lead to significant economic benefits for companies by enabling more precise and consistent control of processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced process control engineer?

To thrive as an Advanced Process Control Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or process engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with control theory, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and APC software like Aspen DMCplus or Honeywell Profit Controller is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively with operations and technical teams. These skills are crucial for optimizing plant performance, ensuring process safety, and delivering cost and efficiency improvements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in advanced process control, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Advanced Process Control (APC) often encounter challenges such as integrating new control strategies with legacy systems, managing large volumes of process data, and ensuring that control solutions remain robust in the face of process variability. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with operations and IT teams, ongoing training in both process engineering and automation technologies, and a proactive approach to troubleshooting and optimization. Staying current with industry best practices and leveraging simulation tools can also help APC engineers deliver effective and reliable control solutions.

What is the difference between Advanced Process Control vs Process Engineer?

AspectAdvanced Process ControlProcess Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in control systemsEngineering degree, often in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing facilities, process industriesDesign, optimize, and improve manufacturing processes across industries
Employer & IndustryProcess industries like oil & gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticalsManufacturing, process industries, consulting firms

Advanced Process Control specialists focus on implementing control algorithms to optimize industrial processes, while Process Engineers design and improve overall manufacturing systems. Both roles require engineering backgrounds, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

Job description

Flint Hills ResourcesinCorpus Christi, Texasis lookingfor anAdvanced Process Control Engineerto join the team! In this role, you will develop, implement, and optimize Advanced Process Control (APC) and Real-Time Optimization (RTO) applications to maximize refinery performance and profitability. At Flint Hills Resources (FHR), we are entrepreneurs. This means we openly challenge the status quo and find new ways to create value.

We are applying a team-based approach to our Optimization and Process Control Capability, where we are advantaged to apply new technologies, modernize our work processes, and innovate. Process Control is a key component for ensuring our refinery runs optimized, at constraints, defect-free, automatically.

Flint Hills Resources is a different kind of company. With over 130,000 employees, we are one of the world’s largest privately owned companies. We have a 9/80 flexible work schedule, a culture of teamwork and collaboration, and a compensation philosophy that is based on the value you create. Come realize your full potential and join our team!

Our Team

As a team, we are developing a full range of process control solutions to improve the profitability of the refinery - from advanced regulatory and DCS-based model predictive control controls to traditional Advanced Process Control (APC), Procedure Automation (PA) and Real-Time Optimization (RTO).

In this role as an Advanced Process Control Engineer, you will play a key role in implementing this vision, focused mainly on the APC and RTO control opportunities.

We recognize the value of experience and expertise. As such, the salary for this position will be commensurate with the candidate's years of experience and demonstrated skills.

What You Will Do
  • Identify and implement APC and RTO process control applications that align with our business vision, working with both site team members and cross-site resources.
  • Team up with Operations and other Process Control Capability team members to ensure that process control applications are functioning as designed, delivering real benefits, and running with high uptimes.
  • Make ongoing improvements to existing APC and RTO application models and configuration.
  • Implement new APC and RTO technologies, including non-linear models and AI / machine learning algorithms.
  • Find innovative ways to align economic strategies and process control strategies to fully optimize the refinery.
  • Mentor other less-experienced process control engineers in APC and RTO technologies.
  • Collaborate with other process control, automation, and innovation resources throughout FHR and Koch Industries via knowledge networks and conferences.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Experience working in the refining or chemical processing industries.
  • Experience with delivering value-added process control and APC applications (multi-variable, model-based solutions).
What Will Put You Ahead
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of APC experience in the refining or chemical processing industries.
  • Experience with Aspentech applications (DMC3, Aspen IQ, Aspen Watch, GDOT, HYSYS, etc.).
  • Experience with the Emerson Delta V DCS system.

This role is subject to the Transportation Workers Identification Credentialing (TWIC) rule and requires the successful candidate to obtain a TWIC identification badge, allowing for un-escorted access to the facility within a specific time period.
