What is an adult day program?

An Adult Day Program is a structured service designed to provide social, recreational, and health-related support to adults, typically seniors or individuals with disabilities, during daytime hours. These programs offer a safe and engaging environment where participants can interact with others, participate in activities, and receive assistance with daily living tasks. They also provide respite for caregivers, allowing them to work or take a break while knowing their loved one is cared for. Services often include meals, therapeutic activities, and sometimes health monitoring or rehabilitation services. Adult Day Programs help enhance quality of life, promote independence, and support overall well-being.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for staff working in an adult day program?

Staff in an Adult Day Program typically assist participants with daily activities such as personal care, meal preparation, and recreational programming. They also monitor clients' health and well-being, facilitate social interaction, and coordinate with healthcare professionals and family members as needed. Teamwork is essential, as staff often collaborate to create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for adults with varying needs. Flexibility and strong communication skills are important, given the diverse backgrounds and abilities of program participants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an adult day program coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Adult Day Program Coordinator, you need a background in social work, healthcare, or human services, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications such as CPR/First Aid. Familiarity with care management software, scheduling tools, and regulatory compliance is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and problem-solving abilities help create a supportive and engaging environment for participants. These competencies ensure the safety, well-being, and enrichment of adults in the program while meeting organizational and regulatory standards.

Job description

Company Description

At Dungarvin, we are dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals with diverse abilities. We provide essential support to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, and mental health conditions - empowering them to thrive in their communities. Where barriers exist, we create pathways for inclusion and independence.

About our Adult Day Program:

Our Adult Day Program provides structured daytime services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Individuals participate in skill-building, recreational, educational, and community-based activities that support independence, social connection, and personal goals. Staff work directly with individuals throughout the day, providing instruction, encouragement, personal care, behavioral support, and opportunities for meaningful participation.

The Role

Dungarvin is seeking a confident, organized, dependable, and experienced Program Coordinator (PC) for our Adult Day Program in Long Beach, CA

The Program Coordinator (PC) is the lead Direct Support Professional (DSP) within the program. This is a hands-on working lead role, not a supervisory position.

The PC works directly with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout the day, providing personal care, instruction, skill development, and positive behavioral support. The goal is simple: keep individuals safe, engaged, supported, and moving toward greater independence.

The PC also helps keep the program running. This includes coordinating daily activities, adjusting schedules, supporting documentation, reinforcing program expectations and procedures, and providing day-to-day guidance and coaching to DSP staff. The PC does not supervise, discipline, evaluate, hire, or terminate DSP staff. Employee performance concerns are communicated to the Program Director. The PC reports to the Program Director and leads through communication, consistency, positive influence, and example rather than formal supervisory authority.

**At least one year of relevant direct support experience is required.
