Employer & IndustryNon-clinical recovery programs, community organizationsHealthcare facilities, treatment centers, mental health agencies
Role FocusMotivational support, goal setting, peer guidanceTherapeutic assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning

What qualifications do I need to be an addiction recovery coach?

To become an addiction recovery coach, typically a high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with specialized training or certification in addiction counseling or recovery coaching. Many employers prefer candidates with experience in mental health, substance use treatment, or related fields, and certifications such as the International Coach Federation (ICF) or Certified Recovery Coach (CRC) can enhance job prospects.

What is an addiction recovery coach?

An Addiction Recovery Coach is a trained professional who provides support, guidance, and encouragement to individuals recovering from substance use disorders. Unlike therapists or counselors, recovery coaches focus on helping clients set and achieve goals, build coping strategies, and access resources to maintain sobriety. They often draw from personal experience or specialized training to motivate clients, connect them with community services, and assist them in navigating the challenges of early recovery. Recovery coaches play a non-clinical but critical role in supporting long-term recovery.

Are addiction recovery coaches in demand?

Addiction recovery coaches are in increasing demand due to rising awareness of substance use issues and expanded access to treatment programs. They often work in healthcare settings, outpatient clinics, or private practice, and require strong interpersonal skills and relevant certifications. The job outlook is positive, with growth driven by ongoing public health efforts to address addiction.

How does an addiction recovery coach typically collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support clients?

Addiction Recovery Coaches often work closely with therapists, counselors, medical staff, and case managers as part of a multidisciplinary team. They share observations and progress updates to ensure a coordinated approach to the client’s recovery plan. While coaches focus on providing motivation, accountability, and practical support, they also help clients navigate referrals and communicate with other professionals when clinical or medical intervention is needed. This collaborative environment helps address the client's holistic needs and improves recovery outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an addiction recovery coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Addiction Recovery Coach, you need a solid understanding of addiction recovery principles, motivational interviewing techniques, and typically a relevant certification such as Certified Recovery Coach (CRC) or Peer Recovery Support Specialist. Familiarity with recovery management systems, digital communication tools, and client documentation platforms is essential. Exceptional listening skills, empathy, resilience, and the ability to build trust help coaches effectively support clients on their recovery journeys. These skills and qualities are crucial for fostering client engagement, ensuring ethical support, and promoting long-term recovery success.

How to become an addiction recovery coach?

To become an addiction recovery coach, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training or certification in addiction counseling or coaching. Many employers prefer candidates with experience in mental health or substance use treatment, and obtaining certification from organizations like the International Coach Federation or addiction-specific certifying bodies can enhance credibility. Strong communication skills, empathy, and knowledge of recovery strategies are essential for success in this role.

Job description

Peer Support Specialist

Integrated Care

Program: Integrated Care

Education Requirements: High School Diploma/GED

Employment Type: Full-Time

Location: Greeley, CO

Posting Closes: 08.31.2026

At North Range Behavioral Health, we believe no one should face mental health challenges alone. Our compassionate team provides comprehensive, person-centered care, supporting individuals, families, and communities to thrive. We’re proud to be a leader in behavioral health services across Weld County, offering programs for all ages and backgrounds. Our work is grounded in collaboration, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based practices, creating meaningful, lasting impact every day.

Why North Range Behavioral Health?

Because your work should matter – and here, it truly does!

Vision: Where Hope Begins, and Change Is Possible

Mission: North Range Behavioral Health provides compassionate, comprehensive care for people who face mental health and addiction challenges.

Values:

  • Customer First: We help our customers achieve recovery every day.
  • Compassion: We treat everyone with kindness, empathy, and dignity.
  • Collaboration: We build strong relationships, internally and externally, to ensure effective care for our customers.

About the Role:

Integrated Care is built on a simple but powerful belief: behavioral health is a vital part of whole-person wellness, “mind the body, mind the mind.” Our team brings behavioral health services directly into primary care settings, increasing access and reducing barriers by meeting individuals where they already receive medical care, their medical home.

This position plays a key role in delivering integrated behavioral health services within fast-paced primary care clinics. Team members provide behavioral health screenings, assessments, case management, and individual or group therapy to individuals who often present with both physical and behavioral health needs. Success in this role requires flexibility, collaboration, and a strong commitment to patient-centered, whole-person care.

Services are provided to both scheduled and walk-in clients, balancing brief interventions with more structured therapeutic support. Staff may work across one or more of our seven integrated Sunrise locations and should feel comfortable adapting to evolving program needs. Strong documentation skills are essential, as team members maintain accurate and timely records across multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems while partnering closely with multidisciplinary medical teams.

As a Peer Support Specialist, you will create a supportive, empowering environment where clients can identify and pursue their own recovery and resiliency goals. Drawing from your lived experience, you will engage individuals in a peer-to-peer capacity, teaching practical skills and providing encouragement as clients work toward self-identified goals related to social connection, education, housing, benefits, illness management, and overall wellness. Your voice, experience, and authenticity are essential to helping clients feel understood, hopeful, and empowered.

This position includes eligibility for a monthly performance bonus.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide direct services to clients with the guidance of an Administrative or Clinical Supervisor.
  • Use lived experience, empathy, and recovery-oriented practices to model hope, resilience, and effective coping strategies, supporting clients through coaching, role modeling, and appropriate self-disclosure.
  • Partner closely with therapists and the clinical team to coordinate services, respond to client needs, and support treatment goals while helping prevent crises, deterioration, or hospitalization.
  • Help clients access benefits, community resources, and supportive services by coordinating care with internal programs and external partners.
  • Support clients in identifying barriers to recovery or resiliency, recognizing warning signs, and building health habits that promote wellness and reduce the risk of relapse or crisis.
  • Coach clients in practical life and behavioral skills, assist with problem-solving, and support activities of daily living, while offering a compassionate, listening ear.
  • Promote medication awareness and effective communication with medical and mental health providers; assist clients in developing wellness, recovery, or crisis plans (e.g., SAMHSA tools, Psychiatric Advance Directives).
  • Provide encouragement and support to clients and, when appropriate, their families or support systems.
  • Advocate for clients across settings such as schools, nursing facilities, healthcare systems, and family environments.
  • Lead or support social, recreational, peer support, or consumer-run groups that foster connection and community.
  • Maintain timely, accurate documentation, including progress notes and electronic health records, ensuring services are ethically delivered and appropriately billed.

You’re a Great Fit If You:

  • Brings empathy, lived experience, and passion for supporting others.
  • Have a High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience, with the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Lived or relational experience similar to the population served, including experience with mental health challenges, substance use, co-occurring conditions, or child family systems.
  • Actively engaged in personal recovery or resiliency plan for at least one year.
  • Strong motivation to support and inspire others in their recovery journey.
  • Demonstrated respect for individual strengths, independence, and self-determination.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license with an insurable driving record

Perks and Benefits:

  • Generous PTO and paid holidays
  • Multiple medical, dental, and vision plans at no cost to employees
  • Health Reimbursement Account
  • Retirement plan with employer contributions
  • Loan forgiveness opportunities
  • Employee referral bonuses
  • Professional development opportunities
