POSITION SUMMARY: Under immediate supervision performs technical and clerical work of average difficulty in filling of prescriptions, maintaining records and patient files, re-supplying pharmacy medications and ancillaries; learning to perform more complex technical work and does related other work. The Pharmacy Technician I reports directly to the Pharmacy in Charge.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Greets and assists patients, anticipating their needs and being proactive in offering aid in providing a positive experience and retrieving completed orders.
- Assists in filling prescriptions; selects proper drug, places in container in quantity and strength prescribed, applies labels; selects unit doses and gives to pharmacist for review; compounds simple ointments and solutions.
- Answers the phone and assists the patient, unless professional judgement is necessary
- Prepares mail-out prescriptions.
- Accepts prescriptions, verifies patient insurance and information; transcribes and enters orders into computer; prepares labels, updates patient profiles and records; submits for billing, identifies orders not on formulary, notifies pharmacist of formulary, drug interaction and other problems identified by computer.
- Restocks pharmacy bulk and unit dose stock and ancillaries; restocks automatic drug dispensing system; returns unused unit dose medications to stock and credits patient accounts.
- Inspects pharmacy stock and removes medications close to expiration; maintains stock of specified drugs in Pharmacy
- Ensures adequate supplies are available for normal usage; checks in and stores shipments of medications and supplies, including updating prices and quantities
- Provides non-drug information to patients and answers simple inquiries.
- Maintains cleanliness of pharmacy and other storage and dispensing area
- Performs various clerical, bookkeeping, and record keeping functions.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested
- Participates in staff development and educational activities.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Promotes a positive team environment by working cooperatively with other staff, demonstrating flexibility by readily adapting to the day-to-day needs of the pharmacy
- Performs end-of-day cash register procedures including reporting
- Translates for pharmacist as appropriate.
- Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program
- Current certification as a Pharmacy Technician from the Consumer Affairs Board of Pharmacy, State of California
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Ability to type a minimum of 40 wpm; applicant to provide certificate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical and related medical technology.
- Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weights and measurements
- Knowledge of medical safety standards to assist in manufacturing and working with pharmaceutical substances.
- Knowledge of prescription drugs and the dispensing function to check for correctness.
- Knowledge of CareLink, EIP, ADAP and Grant 470 programs
- Knowledge of the principles of Pharmacy Law and 340B rules and regulations
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
- Ability to read and interpret prescription information.
- Ability to perform arithmetical computations and use calculator.
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply written guidelines.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequent standing or walking for extended periods of time. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 35 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, and the ability to read and note appropriate measurements. Vision must be correctable to 20/40 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts. Requires typing ability of 40 wpm. Requires ability to work in stressful situation or work irregular hours.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in an office environment within a clinic setting. Involves frequent contact with staff and the public. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with upset people.
