The Duke University Department of Emergency Medicine invites applications for the position of Residency Program Director. This is a prestigious leadership opportunity within one of the nation's leading academic emergency medicine programs, combining administrative responsibility with continued excellence in education, clinical practice, and scholarly activity.
Ideal candidates will have completed an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program and be BC in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM). Have demonstrated experience in graduate medical education, including curriculum development, resident mentorship, and/or residency administration. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills are essential.
Prior experience as a Program Director, Associate Program Director, or core GME faculty with significant administrative responsibility, a track record of scholarship in emergency medicine, fellowship training in a subspecialty of emergency medicine, and experience leading or participating in CORD, SAEM, or ACEP education-focused committees or working groups is preferred but not mandatory.
The Duke Emergency Medicine Residency Program matches 12 categorical residents per year. The three-year curriculum is recognized for its rigorous clinical training, innovative simulation-based education, diverse patient exposure, and rich research infrastructure. Key program highlights include:

It is a Level I Trauma Center with over 85,000 emergency department visits annually, a state-of-the-art facility, and a strong track record of research and innovation. As a quaternary care referral center, the department treats a socioeconomically, racially, and medically diverse patient population-drawing patients from the local community, surrounding states, and across the country.
The Residency Program Director will hold overall responsibility for the design, implementation, oversight, and continuous improvement of the Duke Emergency Medicine Residency Program in accordance with ACGME requirements. Specific responsibilities include:

• Facilitate the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC), ensuring effective milestone assessment and continuous program improvement
• Lead the design, delivery, and evaluation of the residency curriculum across all three years, including core conference series, simulation programming, and clinical rotations
• Foster a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging within the residency training environment, in alignment with Duke's commitments to health equity and community engagement
• Represent the residency program at CORD, SAEM, ACEP, and other national emergency medicine organizations
• Maintain an active clinical practice in the Duke Emergency Department commensurate with administrative responsibilities
