Job description

The Observation Fellowship (OF) at Progressive Emergency Physicians (PEP) is a 1- year fellowship based out of the observation units operated by Progressive Emergency Physicians. The goal of the fellowship is to understand the role of observation medicine in current and future healthcare settings, and develop expertise in all aspects of observation unit operations. Fellows will also receive mentorship to promote academic productivity in the field of observation medicine. This is a PAID fellowship that provides a health benefits, 401K match and generous compensation pay

Minimum Fellowship Criteria Required for Graduation:

Training

  • The Observation fellow will work a minimum of 3 shifts per week in observation units operated by PEP.
  • The Observation fellow will attend utilization management meetings at GSHMC, and Observation meetings at Catholic Health.
  • The Observation fellow will be responsible for creating dashboards, monitoring metrics, and completing diagnosis specific chart reviews.
  • Fellows will also be responsible for creating/modifying condition specific protocols/guidelines.
  • The Observation fellow must be involved with at least one quality assurance work/project.
  • The Observation fellow must attend one national observation section meeting during the year.
  • The Observation fellow will become a member of the ACEP Observation Medicine Section.

Research

  • The Observation fellow will design at least one research project and begin data collection during the course of the fellowship.
  • At least one abstract will be submitted with the fellows name as first author and presenter to a national meeting such as ACEP or SAEM during the fellowship year.
  • The Observation fellow should be involved with at least one other research project during the fellowship for which publication is planned with the fellow as an author.

Education

  • The Observation fellow must deliver at least 2 separate lectures on observation medicine to the Department of Emergency Medicine (residents and faculty).
  • The Observation fellow will coordinate a resident elective in observation medicine including developing and updating elective goals and objectives.
  • The Observation fellow will attend yearly national ACEP conference (if possible), and the ACEP Observation Medicine Conference.
  • The Observation fellow will read Observation Medicine by Louis G. Graff,  Observational Medicine: Principles and Protocols by Sharon E. Mace, and other assigned scholarly articles during the course of the fellowship.
  • Monthly Didactic sessions which will cover definition of services, administrative design, development of protocols, staffing, physical design, PI/QA, coding/billing/reimbursement, clinical diagnosis and pathways, and all other aspects of observation medicine.

Evaluation

  • Semi-annual evaluations with fellowship and administrative leadership will be held.  Each fellow will be provided with a written evaluation.

Weekly Schedule

  • Fellows will be scheduled for approximately 36 clinical hours per week.
  • The fellow will also attend Administrative meetings as above.
