Can you make $500,000 a year as an accountant?

Accounting managers can potentially earn $500,000 annually, especially in senior roles, large corporations, or with extensive experience and specialized skills. However, such high salaries are uncommon and typically require advanced certifications like CPA, a strong track record, and leadership responsibilities. Most accounting managers earn significantly less, with top-tier salaries reaching into the high six figures in certain markets.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time Accounting Managers, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Part-time Accounting Managers often face the challenge of balancing multiple responsibilities within limited working hours, which can include overseeing financial reporting, managing staff, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Prioritizing tasks, setting clear communication channels with both their team and upper management, and leveraging accounting software to automate routine processes can help manage these challenges effectively. Establishing a strong workflow and delegating appropriately are also key to maintaining accuracy and meeting important deadlines, even with a part-time schedule.

The main difference between an Accounting Manager Part Time and an Accounting Supervisor lies in their scope and hours. The part-time manager typically works fewer hours and focuses on overseeing accounting functions on a flexible schedule, while the supervisor often works full-time, directly supervising accounting staff and daily operations. Both roles require similar credentials and are found in comparable work environments, but their hours and managerial responsibilities differ.

What personality traits fit accounting?

Accounting managers typically possess traits such as attention to detail, strong analytical skills, integrity, and good organizational abilities. They should also be able to work independently, handle pressure, and communicate effectively with team members and clients. These traits help ensure accuracy and compliance in financial reporting and management.

Can you make $100,000 as an accountant?

Accounting managers can earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with experience, certifications like CPA, and working in large organizations or metropolitan areas. Salary depends on factors such as industry, location, and level of responsibility, with some senior or specialized roles exceeding this amount. Part-time positions typically offer lower total compensation but can vary based on hours and scope of work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accounting Manager Part Time, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accounting Manager Part Time, you need a solid background in accounting principles, financial reporting, and experience with budgeting or auditing, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks or SAP, and sometimes a CPA certification, are commonly required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing multiple priorities and collaborating with teams. These competencies ensure accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and efficient operations even within a reduced work schedule.

How many hours does a part-time accountant work?

A part-time accounting manager typically works fewer than 30 hours per week, often between 20 and 25 hours, depending on the employer and specific job requirements. The schedule may include evenings or weekends and can vary based on workload and organizational needs.

What does a part-time Accounting Manager do?

A part-time Accounting Manager oversees financial operations and reporting for an organization while working fewer hours than a full-time employee. Their responsibilities typically include managing accounting staff, preparing financial statements, ensuring compliance with regulations, and overseeing budgeting and audits. Part-time Accounting Managers may work for small businesses, nonprofits, or companies that do not require a full-time manager, providing expertise and leadership on a flexible schedule.

Job description

You've built a strong foundation in accounting. Now step into more leadership.
Marketing for Change Co. is an independent national advertising firm propelled by behavioral science and focused on social change. We are seeking a Senior Accounting Manager/Financial Analyst who can own core accounting operations, strengthen financial systems, and support a growing team with clarity and consistency.
This is a senior level role for someone who is confident operating independently, improving processes, and helping translate financial data into decisions that support agency-wide work. While the position is initially part-time, there is potential for it to expand into a full-time role for the right person. We also see a future pathway for this position to grow into a Controller role as the agency continues to evolve.
Why This Role Matters
We believe financial clarity strengthens everything we do. As Senior Accounting Manager/Financial Analyst, you will oversee key accounting workflows and help ensure the accuracy, consistency and usability of financial information across the agency. Your work supports leadership in making informed decisions while keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly.
What You'll Do
  • Oversee monthly close processes and ensure accuracy across reconciliations, reporting and financial outputs
  • Own and refine core accounting workflows including AP, AR, invoicing and project financial tracking
  • Review and support project setup and financial structure in systems such as Unanet
  • Develop and maintain reporting that supports leadership visibility into financial performance and KPIs
  • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting and audit preparation
  • Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes and internal controls
  • Serve as a point of escalation for accounting questions and ensure consistency in financial practices
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure financial accuracy across projects and client work
  • Support compliance and documentation requirements across accounting and operational processes
  • Other general accounting and finance duties as assigned

What We Are Seeking
  • Experience managing accounting operations with a high degree of independence.
  • Strong knowledge of project-based accounting and standard accounting principles, including month-end close processes.
  • Experience working in complex, cross-functional environments with multiple stakeholders.
  • Comfort improving and standardizing financial workflows and systems.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate financial information clearly to non-finance partners.
  • Experience with accounting systems and reporting tools, ideally including Unanet or similar platforms.
  • Ability to balance hands-on accounting work with process improvement and oversight responsibilities.
  • Strong judgment, organization, and attention to detail in fast-moving environments.

Requirements
Job Type: Part-time, with potential to expand into a full-time role based on agency needs and candidate fit.
Salary Range: Salary will be commensurate with experience, with an expected range between $55,000 - $95,000 per year for a full-time equivalent role. Compensation for part-time arrangements will be prorated based on schedule and scope.
About Marketing for Change
We are an advertising agency that leverages the power of social psychology, neuroscience and behavioral economics to advance social causes. Founded in 2005, Marketing for Change helps foundations, nonprofits, governments and companies "do good better."
Our 30-plus team includes copywriters, filmmakers, designers, researchers, developers and strategists - not to mention musicians, artists, podcasters, kayakers, and mountaineers. Because that part of life is just as important as work. Our work hubs are located in Orlando and just outside Washington, DC, and we very much prefer to hire people willing to locate in those areas. We are mostly a hybrid workforce with staff working together in-person at least one day a week because we value the fun and collaboration that allows.
Some of the perks:
  • We care about each other. We check in. We advocate and cover for each other. We cheer each other on. And we like to hang out.
  • We offer a comprehensive benefits package including vacation, sick and holiday leave, 401(k) matching contributions, and paid parental leave. We offer a range of health plans including PPO and HSA healthcare, as well as dental, disability and life insurance.
  • We are a deliberately developmental workplace. That means we will help you develop and pursue professional goals that match your life goals and purpose.
  • We prioritize balance and flexibility. We are at our desks most days for 8 hours, not 10. We are open to schedule adjustments and flexible schedules.
  • We are a flat organization. Everyone's ideas are valued. Anyone can spearhead a new company initiative or make change.
  • We care about social change. We show up each day as part of a fun and friendly work culture to do inspiring work that makes the world a better place.
