What is an accounting co op?

An Accounting Co-Op is a structured internship program that allows students to gain hands-on experience in accounting by working with a company while completing their academic studies. These programs typically alternate periods of classroom learning with paid work in a professional setting. Participants get to apply their classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios, develop practical skills, and build professional networks. Co-ops often lead to better job prospects after graduation and can sometimes result in a full-time job offer from the host company.

What types of projects and tasks can an accounting co op expect to work on during their placement?

As an Accounting Co Op, you will typically support accounting teams with a variety of tasks, such as assisting in accounts payable and receivable, reconciling bank statements, preparing journal entries, and helping with month-end closing processes. You may also be involved in data analysis, generating financial reports, and supporting audits. The work environment often encourages collaboration with both junior and senior accountants, giving you valuable exposure to real-world accounting practices and opportunities to learn from experienced professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accounting co op, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accounting Co Op, you typically need a solid understanding of accounting principles, coursework in finance or accounting, and strong analytical skills. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks or SAP, as well as proficiency in Excel, is often required, and some roles may prefer candidates pursuing CPA certification. Blue & Co. is seeking a high-performing CPA professional with 3–5 years of experience to join our rapidly expanding agriculture practice. Our firm is experiencing significant growth in the agribusiness sector, and we are looking for a dedicated specialist to lead engagements within this fast-paced niche.

This position offers fully remote or hybrid flexibility. For candidates located near our Indiana offices, we provide a hybrid environment that blends in-person collaboration with the convenience of working from home. Co-op Advisory: Manage the unique accounting requirements of cooperatives, such as patronage dividend distributions, per-unit retain accounting, and member equity tracking.

Flexible Engagement Management: Coordinate and execute engagements using a mix of cloud-based audit tools and, if hybrid, periodic in-person collaboration to maintain high service levels.

Growth Support: Contribute to the scaling of our Ag practice by refining audit programs specific to agribusiness and assisting with the onboarding of new agricultural clients.

Staff Mentorship: Supervise and mentor junior staff, providing technical guidance on specialized Ag accounting both virtually and in-person as applicable.

Client Service: Ability to travel as needed, including overnight travel, to client locations.

Required Qualifications:

Certification: Active CPA license is required.

Experience: 3–5 years of progressive experience in public accounting, with a primary focus on audit and assurance.

Industry Expertise: Direct experience with agricultural cooperatives or grain accounting is highly preferred.

Technical Proficiency: Strong expertise in US GAAP, specifically ASC 815 (Derivatives and Hedging) and ASC 606 as they relate to agricultural commodities.

Ag Passion: A genuine interest in the agriculture industry and the desire to be a subject matter expert in a fast-growing niche.

Preferred Skills:

Experience with grain merchandising software (e.g., Agvantage, AgVance, Great Plains) and cloud-based audit platforms.

Strong analytical skills regarding commodity markets, hedging, and the financial impact of basis movement on grain financial statements.

Proven ability to work effectively in a flexible environment, whether remote or hybrid.

Excellent communication skills for delivering technical financial reports to Cooperative Boards and management teams.

We are responsive. We are caring. We are advocates.
