Job description

Ready to help craft breweries master their numbers?
If you're a strong bookkeeper who hasn't found the right training, team, or opportunity to grow into a high-level accountant, this role was built for you.
We're Small Batch Standard, a remote accounting, tax, and consulting firm built exclusively to serve the craft brewing industry. In short, we help breweries make more profit so they can focus on brewing great beer.
We're looking for a full-time Brewery Accounting Associate to support the day-to-day bookkeeping needs of our brewery clients and grow into a brewery accounting specialist.
This role is ideal if you're an Accounting Associate, Bookkeeper, or Staff Accountant who wants:
  • 100% remote work with no timesheets or hour tracking.
  • One clearly defined niche: you work only with craft breweries.
  • A stable, recurring book of clients you get to know deeply over time.
  • A team filled with self-managing accounting experts dedicated to your growth.
  • A clear path from Associate โ†’ Accountant, often in 6-12 months, with matching pay increases.
Compensation and Benefits
Here's what this role has to offer as an on-ramp to our high-level accounting team:
  • Base Salary: $51,000-$60,000 per year based on skills and experience.
  • Clear promotion track to Accountant ($64,000-$73,000 plus bonus eligibility) once you've met our mastery benchmarks. Many Associates reach this in 6-12 months.
  • 100% remote, no in-office requirements, flexible schedule with no time sheets or hours tracking.
  • Full benefits (medical, dental, vision), 3 weeks PTO, and 11 company holidays.
  • Continuing education support through books, courses, and certifications, plus brewery visits and industry conference attendance so you actually see the impact of your work.
  • An all-expenses-paid annual retreat with the SBS team.
What You'll Do
You'll report to an Accounting Manager and play a key role in keeping our brewery clients' books clean and up to date. In this role you will:
  • Handle the day-to-day AP and bookkeeping work for a set of brewery clients in Bill.com and QuickBooks Online.
  • Maintain clean, accurate QBO bank feeds by matching transactions, entering payroll, and keeping bank and POS syncs current.
  • Support monthly close work by collecting and preparing statements and documentation for your Accountant teammates.
  • Communicate with brewery clients to request information, resolve questions, and keep their accounting moving smoothly.
  • Collaborate closely with our Accountants and other Associates so they have what they need from your work to complete monthly close and compliance filings.
Growth Path
We hire Accounting Associates with the goal of growing them into brewery accounting experts and, ultimately, into our Accountant role. Here's how that progression works:
  • Level 1: Brewery Bookkeeping Foundation. You'll focus on building a strong bookkeeping base for your brewery clients. This includes processing invoices, receipts, credit memos, and other documents in Bill.com and QBO, maintaining clean bank feeds and POS syncs, and learning our internal systems and workflows. The goal at this stage is accuracy, consistency, and mastering the fundamentals.
  • Level 2: Brewery Bookkeeping and Close Support. Once you've nailed the basics, you'll start taking on monthly close tasks for select clients under your manager's guidance. You'll prepare reconciliations and other close-related work, begin communicating directly with clients to gather information, resolve issues, and troubleshoot routine bookkeeping and tech-stack questions.
  • Level 3: Brewery Close Ready (Path to Accountant). At this stage, you're splitting your time roughly 50/50 between recurring bookkeeping and close work. You'll own the full monthly close for many of your assigned clients (including reconciliations, accruals, inventory, etc.) with support from your Accounting Manager. As you demonstrate consistency against our mastery metrics, you'll be ready to step into the full Accountant role and take primary ownership of monthly close and client relationships.
How We Measure Success
You'll know exactly what winning looks like:
  • Consistent weekly progress to close gaps on your Accounting Skills Matrix.
  • Your clients' books are consistently accurate and delivered on time.
  • Your Accountant teammates and Manager rarely need to jump in to fix issues.
  • You've reached and maintained your target client book (number and mix of clients).
  • Clients can rely on your bookkeeping consistency and provide positive feedback.
About You
You'll be a strong fit if you:
  • Enjoy consistent, detailed work and find no task "too small."
  • Are tech-comfortable and pick up new systems quickly.
  • Can manage yourself: you plan your week, hit your deadlines, and communicate proactively.
  • Write and speak clearly with clients and teammates in a fully remote environment.
  • Like the idea of becoming a true specialist in one industry instead of a generalist in many.
Requirements
To be successful in this role you'll need to have:
  • 1+ year of experience as an Accounting Associate, Bookkeeper, Staff Accountant or similar.
  • Comfort working with multiple clients or entities at once (public firm, outsourced accounting, or similar experience is a plus).
  • Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online; experience with Bill.com is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment (prior remote experience helpful but not required).
  • Reliable internet, a quiet setup for video calls, and availability during normal business hours (9-5, Monday-Friday).
  • Must be based in the U.S. and legally authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.
  • Preferred: experience with brewery or inventory-heavy, accrual-based clients; prior experience with tools like Square, Toast, Gusto, Podio or Asana.
Our Culture
We're fully remote, with team members and clients located all across the U.S. and have developed our own unique culture we call The SBS Way. The right person for this role will personally subscribe to and use the following core values as a guide for their day-to-day work:
  • Be Antifragile. Everything we do is an opportunity for learning and continuous improvement.
  • Play The Long Game. We make decisions in the long-term interest of our firm, our clients, and our industry.
  • Act as A Team of Experts. We collaborate and provide feedback to develop ourselves and deliver exceptional results for our clients.
How To Apply
If this sounds like the right next step in your accounting career, click "Apply" and include a short note on why craft breweries and remote work are a fit for you.
Our hiring process:
  • A short online application with a few brief screening questions for skills fit (about 10-15 minutes).
  • 45-minute accounting-focused session with an Accounting Manager to align on the details.
  • 30-minute culture fit call with our Director of Operations to make sure our firm is right for you.
  • Final conversation with our CEO to discuss your career trajectory and answer any final questions you have before our final decision and offer.

We review applications daily and move quickly, aiming to complete the process within 7-14 days for strong candidates.
