What does an account manager do at a startup?

An Account Manager at a startup is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and helping them achieve success with the company's products or services. They often serve as the main point of contact between the client and the startup, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and identifying opportunities for growth and upselling. In the fast-paced startup environment, Account Managers may also assist with onboarding, troubleshooting, and collaborating closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver an excellent customer experience.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an account manager in a startup?

To thrive as an Account Manager at a startup, you need strong relationship-building skills, sales acumen, and a background in business or marketing, often evidenced by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce, project management platforms, and digital communication systems is typically required. Outstanding adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and effective communication help you stand out in the fast-paced and dynamic startup setting. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving customer success, managing rapid change, and supporting business growth in a competitive environment.

What unique challenges do account managers face when working at a startup compared to established companies?

Account Managers at startups often encounter a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where processes and structures are still evolving. This means they may need to wear multiple hats, adapting quickly to shifting client needs and internal priorities. Unlike larger companies with established support systems, startup Account Managers often take on broader responsibilities, such as helping shape customer onboarding or product feedback loops. This dynamic can be both challenging and rewarding, offering significant opportunities to influence growth and build strong client relationships from the ground up.

Job description

Why Join Ivo?
Every civilization runs on the same infrastructure: agreements between people who don't fully trust each other. Sumerians pressed them into clay. Romans carved them into stone. We bury them in 80-page PDFs.
The way those agreements are reviewed hasn't changed in four thousand years - a human reads the whole thing and tries not to miss anything. We're building the AI that finally changes that. Ivo is the contract intelligence platform of choice for companies like Uber, Meta, Canva, and IBM, and Intel. We recently raised our Series B and have grown 800% over the last 12 months.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Enterprise Account Manager to take ownership of some of our most strategic customer relationships. This is a high-impact, revenue-facing role where you'll be the primary driver of growth across your portfolio.
Success in this role means becoming a true growth partner to your customers - trusted enough to influence decisions at every level of their organization, and effective enough to turn that trust into measurable, lasting account growth for Ivo.
What You'll Do
  • Own and Grow Strategic Accounts: You will own and grow a portfolio of enterprise accounts, building long-term relationships and ensuring Ivo's solutions stay aligned with customer outcomes. Acting as both a trusted advisor and a growth partner, you'll help customers realize value from our platform while securing revenue and driving expansion.
  • Drive Renewals and Expansion:You will manage the full renewals and expansion motion, running consultative sales cycles and uncovering new opportunities through cross-sell and upsell strategies. By combining business acumen with technical fluency, you'll demonstrate ROI at both the executive and end-user level, increasing adoption and engagement across teams.
  • Build and Maintain Account Plans: You will create and maintain account plans with clear next steps, tracking progress against both customer and company goals. These plans become the foundation for how you prioritize time and resources across your portfolio.
  • Partner Cross-Functionally: You will partner closely with CSMs, Solutions Architects, Product, Finance, Legal Engineers, and other internal teams to surface opportunities and resolve challenges before they escalate, ensuring customer feedback translates into real improvements and that risk is caught early.
  • Monitor Customer Health: You will monitor customer health and key metrics to proactively identify risk and mitigate churn, staying close to usage data and account signals so you can act before issues become retention problems.
  • Stay Ahead of Industry Trends: You will stay informed on industry trends and customer digital strategies, positioning Ivo as an indispensable partner rather than just another vendor in the stack.

What You'll Bring
  • 4+ years of enterprise sales or account management experience in complex technical solutions, with a proven track record of exceeding growth goals and delivering net revenue retention.
  • You're skilled at navigating complex organizations, securing executive buy-in, and building deep, lasting relationships across accounts.
  • You have a strong commercial acumen and skilled at structuring enterprise contracts, multi-year commitments, and navigating enterprise procurement and legal processes
  • You pair an analytical, data-driven approach with consultative selling skills, identifying opportunities and turning insights into actionable account plans that show customers clear business value.
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
  • You're entrepreneurial at heart - hands-on, creative, and team-oriented, motivated to define processes, build programs, and deliver excellence.
A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience rounds out your profile.

Bonus Points
  • Experience in legal tech, contract management, or vertical SaaS selling into enterprise legal or procurement teams.
  • Experience taking a product from mid-market into enterprise at a high-growth startup.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML products and the ability to translate technical capabilities into board-level business value.
  • Experience with complex, multi-year enterprise deals involving legal, finance, and IT buying centers.
Ivo might be a good fit for you if you:
  • Would describe yourself as being relentlessly resourceful.
  • You have a strong internal sense of urgency. You have a bias towards doing things today, rather than tomorrow.
  • Experience working in a startup environment is preferred but not required.
  • Are excited about the adventure of building a company!

What We Offer
  • Competitive Compensation: Final offer details are determined based on experience, expertise, and overall fit.
  • Equity: Meaningful ownership in a company that's scaling fast
  • Relocation and Visa Support: We also offer relocation assistance for successful applicants moving to SF, as well as support for visa and green card applications where applicable.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans to suit the needs of you and your family.
  • Flexible Spending & Insurance: Access to HSA and FSA accounts, plus life insurance coverage.
  • 401(k) Program: Save for the future with our 401(k) program.
  • Commuter Benefits: We help make getting to and from the office easier and more convenient.
  • Unlimited PTO: So you can take the time you need to recharge, stay healthy, and bring your best self to work.
  • Office Perks: Enjoy a vibrant Downtown San Francisco office with catered lunch five days a week, premium snacks and coffee, an in-building gym, and a dog-friendly environment.
