Job description

Overview
Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking an Engineering Designer or Project Engineer to join our Civil/Site Division in Rochester, NY. This role supports a national retail program team, primarily focused on store remodels, expansions, parking lot reconstructions, and site improvement projects for a major national retailer.
The position will collaborate with program managers, clients, architects, MEP engineers, and municipalities on site due diligence, conceptual planning, ADA and parking improvements, grading and drainage, stormwater management, utility coordination, and permitting.
While the primary focus is national retail program work, this role may also support local land development projects, providing exposure to both high-volume programs and traditional development work. The selected candidate will work in AutoCAD Civil 3D and support projects from feasibility through design, permitting, and construction coordination.
Engineers in this role have the opportunity to work on projects from early site feasibility and due diligence through design, permitting, construction coordination, and project closeout, providing valuable real-world exposure to how civil engineering designs are implemented in the field. The Civil/Site Engineer will work within AutoCAD Civil 3D and alongside design team managers and other disciplines to successfully complete projects within established budgets and deadlines. Our engineering staff are supported by Colliers' unique and highly capable Project Services Coordination team, who assist with project logistics, tracking, and documentation. This structure allows our engineers and designers to stay focused on technical design and engineering problem solving rather than administrative project management tasks.
Join our Civil/Site team and build your career alongside experienced retail program engineers and project managers working on high-volume national client programs. Engineers in this role benefit from frequent collaboration with architects, building engineers, contractors, and client representatives while also having opportunities to visit project sites and see their designs implemented.
At Colliers Engineering & Design, we take pride in shaping the communities where we live and work through thoughtful site development and redevelopment projects that improve accessibility, safety, and functionality.
Responsibilities
  • Apply broad knowledge of principles and practices in land development.
  • Support civil engineering design for retail site redevelopment projects including store remodels, building expansions, parking lot reconstructions, and site infrastructure improvements for a national retail client.
  • Independently evaluate, select and adapt standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
  • Prepare engineering designs, calculations, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Prepare complete project documents.
  • Analyze and interpret data and solve engineering problems.
  • Prepare scopes of work, budgets and schedule assignments.
  • Assist with proposal development for professional services.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with project managers and clients to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee engineering tasks while delegating work to junior staff.
  • Present project components in internal and client meetings.
  • Work within AutoCAD Civil 3D to successfully complete projects within established budgets and deadlines.
  • Conduct field investigations and site visits as required.
  • Perform grading, utility, and stormwater designs from concept through permitting.
  • Coordinate closely with architectural, structural, and MEP design teams to ensure site design integrates seamlessly with building design and utilities.
  • Coordinate with national client representatives, contractors, and internal program managers to ensure designs meet retailer program standards, local code requirements, and project schedules.
  • Assist with due diligence reviews, ADA compliance evaluations, and preparation of site development plans required for municipal approvals.
  • Support a mix of national retail program projects and occasional local land development assignments for regional developer clients.
  • Conduct site visits as needed for project scoping, pre-construction meetings, and punch list evaluations at project sites throughout New York State and the Northeast.
  • Work within a high-volume national program environment where multiple projects are managed simultaneously under accelerated schedules.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (or related field).
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • EIT required, PE preferred.
  • Experience with commerical redevelopment, retail site design, or multi-site development programs is strongly preferred.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD Civil 3D, HydroCAD, Storm Sewers and other related software packages, as applicable.
  • Demonstrate general computer skills, knowledge and acumen (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to effectively lead and mentor junior staff, delegate tasks, and foster a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to learn and apply technical skills and knowledge.
  • Demonstrate advanced, general and basic non-routine knowledge of engineering concepts, theories, principles and practices.
  • Demonstrate basic speaking skills to communicate general technical ideas, concepts and information to a technical and nontechnical audience.
  • Demonstrate advanced technical and nontechnical writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both oral and written for the purpose of client, contractor and co-worker interactions.

Compensation: $77,000 to $93,000 per year (depending on qualifications)
