SUPERVISES: Associate Principal, Design Associate, Project Manager(s)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the CEO, the Principal of the Single-Family Studio is responsible for operations, staff performance, financial profitability, staff development and growth of his/her group, consistent with LDIโ€™s polices and approved business plan. Oversee the Groupโ€™s Associate Principals, Designers and Project Managers and assure technical and financial performance of all projects to meet Quality & Cost Assurance standards. Oversee the Groupโ€™s organizational staff development and administer LDIโ€™s policies and programs.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Strategy

  • Demonstrate leadership by facing challenges, solving problems, and motivating teams.
  • Develop and implement the Groupโ€™s business plan to strengthen market position.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, serving as a Client Sponsor.
  • Increase LDIโ€™s competitive position through strategic initiatives.

Business & Financial Management

  • Review and approve all Group bids, proposals, and contracts for accuracy and profitability.
  • Negotiate bid pricing, work scope, and terms in alignment with company policies.
  • Approve Group billings, manage variances, and recommend write-offs or credits.
  • Negotiate Group contracts and budgets to ensure financial sustainability.

Talent Development & Team Management

  • Recruit, train, and supervise Group personnel; develop successors for key roles.
  • Administer career development plans, quarterly Intern Development Program, and annual evaluations.
  • Manage personnel decisions including hiring, termination, promotions, and salary reviews.
  • Mentor Group management in technical, administrative, financial, and marketing areas.

Design & Project Execution

  • Conduct programming and feasibility studies.
  • Assist in design, production, and construction administration to ensure accuracy and coordination.
  • Produce high-quality designs that meet client expectations without compromising profitability.
  • Respond to construction administration queries requiring resolution by architects, engineers, or contractors.
  • Stamp and seal drawings as a licensed architect; obtain additional licenses as needed.
  • Write contracts and proposal agreements with Project Managers to define fees, schedules, and terms.
  • Develop work scopes, prepare budgets, and ensure quality assurance for all assigned projects.
  • Ensure compliance with state/local codes and accessibility requirements.

Growth & Market Position

  • Market LDIโ€™s services in coordination with other Senior Principals and Principals.
  • Develop new business opportunities and maintain client relationships in line with the business plan.
  • Review and support the development of Project Management Plans.
  • Monitor and achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the Group and self.
  • Maintain target labor utilization and coordinate with other leadership roles.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This position will require up to 50% local travel

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will be responsible for the supervision of Associate Principals, Designers, and Project Managers.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Education: Bachelorโ€™s Degree (BA/BS), preferably in Architecture, or related field

Architectural License: Required license in all states where projects are located

Experience:

  • 15+ yearโ€™s exp. in Single-family/Townhome projects
  • Proven Business Development experience is a must

Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in REVIT, MS Office required, Photoshop and/or InDesign a plus
