Position Title: Design Associate

Position Summary

The Design Associate provides technical and administrative support to the Planning and Development team in the planning, design, and construction of educational facility projects. This role assists with architectural and engineering coordination, document review, contract administration, project research, and compliance with applicable building codes and District standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Planning and Development staff in the planning, design, and construction of educational facilities.

  • Assist with the administration of Architectural and Engineering (A/E) contracts, invoices, and related documentation.

  • Read, interpret, and review architectural, engineering, and planning drawings and documents.

  • Review plans and construction documents for compliance with LAUSD standards, California building codes, ADA, Title 24, CalGreen, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Collect, organize, and analyze project data for reports, studies, and presentations.

  • Conduct project research and assist in preparing technical reports.

  • Maintain and update project files with technical documentation.

  • Coordinate with internal departments, including:

    • Office of Environmental Health and Safety

    • A/E Design Services

    • Maintenance & Operations

    • Furniture & Interiors Group

    • Project Execution

    • Local District Offices

  • Participate in community outreach efforts to promote understanding and support of District construction projects.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Minimum QualificationsRequired Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of full-time professional experience in an architectural, engineering, or planning environment.

  • Experience with:

    • Architectural and engineering design coordination

    • Planning and design documentation

    • Field investigations and site surveys

    • Review of architectural and engineering drawings

  • At least 3 years of experience supporting the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public agency projects.

Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Planning, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.


Required Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong understanding of architectural, engineering, and planning terminology, concepts, and construction documentation.

  • Knowledge of building materials, construction detailing, and technical specifications.

  • Familiarity with:

    • California Department of Education requirements

    • Division of the State Architect (DSA)

    • ADA Accessibility Standards

    • California Title 24

    • CalGreen

    • California Building, Fire, and Energy Codes

  • Ability to:

    • Analyze architectural and engineering issues and recommend practical solutions.
