The department of Communication, Media, Art & Design at Morehead State University is accepting applications for a full-time position as an Academic Department Specialist. The anticipated start date is April 1, 2026.

RESPONSIBILITIES: With limited supervision, coordinates office operations and reports directly to the chair of the academic department. The Academic Department Specialist has signing and approval duties as identified by the department chair, assists the departmental faculty, and serves as the initial point of contact for students and the public. Manages the office in accordance with departmental and university regulations and directives, performing administrative tasks as needed. The position requires the ability to anticipate tasks, work independently, and take initiative to complete them while simultaneously completing daily routine work. Must be knowledgeable of department and university programs in order to answer inquiries based upon administrative policy. Must be problem-solving oriented. Supervises work study students and/or clerical staff. Dealing with confidential matters is a critical aspect of this position.
REQUIREMENTS: Associate's degree or high school diploma (or GED equivalent) with two years of secretarial experience. Must have experience with and knowledge of various computer software related to department needs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in an academic setting or similar setting preferred. Additional experience beyond that minimally required. Specialized experience with payroll, budget monitoring, and the maintenance of bookkeeping records associated with office accounts. Bachelor's degree is desirable.

Organizational Relationships
The Academic Department Specialist reports to the Department Chair. The Academic Department Specialist supervises work-study students and/or other clerical staff. Interacts with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the general public.

The Academic Department Specialist works in a highly productive office environment with frequent interruptions and noise from visitors, students, faculty, staff, and callers. Pressure is expected on the job due to the frequency and volume of visitors and callers, and the need to meet multiple deadlines. Campus presence is expected during normal working hours; however, flexible work hours may be required during emergencies. This position requires initiative, sound judgment, a high degree of responsibility and independence, and the ability to handle confidential information. A high degree of accuracy is essential for the academic department specialist to be successful.
