Job description

Position Title

Department Chair of Business (Faculty)

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with program directors and associate chairs to drive innovation in teaching and develop academic programs.
  • Ensure the quality of instruction in the department by supervising faculty teaching, consulting with each member regarding the nature, scope, and quality of their work, and maintaining an overview of student performance.
  • Maintain robust assessment practices at the course and pathway level to meet accreditation requirements and promote excellence in teaching.
  • Develop, manage, and staff the department schedule of classes, prioritizing enrollment trends, course demand, capacity needs, and the university's strategic goals.
  • Assign courses within the department and maintain an equitable distribution of courses and sections. Prepare course information for the catalog as needed and transmit materials to the dean of the college or the dean’s designee.
  • Recruit and appoint new faculty whose qualifications align with institutional objectives; recommend appointments, re‑appointments, promotions, and, consistent with tenure policy, dismissals of faculty members.
  • Support scholarly and creative activity within the department.
  • Lead the general direction of departmental work, facilitating efficient and effective operations, and consult with faculty to develop and execute policies in alignment with university and college practices.
  • Serve as the direct supervisor for all faculty in the department, including associate and assistant chairs when applicable, and for staff members directly or indirectly under the department.
  • Plan the annual department budget, consulting with faculty to form the budget plan, and manage financial activities as required.
  • Prepare an annual report for the dean of the college on teaching, scholarly, creative activities, and service work of the department.
  • Teach one (1) section of a three (3) credit hour/workload hour course during the academic year, totaling three (3) credit hours per year.
  • Participate in professional development activities, including leadership development and relevant training on software, reporting systems, university initiatives, and standard operating procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or as they evolve.
  • Undergo evaluation by the department faculty at least every three years; this evaluation is overseen by the dean and informs the chair’s overall performance review. Chairs are also reviewed annually by their immediate supervisor.

The chair is evaluated by the department faculty at least every three years and by the dean annually. Evaluation results are reported to the dean and used in the overall assessment of the chair’s performance.

Required Experience
  • Academic and teaching record suitable for tenure and rank at appointment as associate professor or professor at Perimeter College.
  • One year of academic leadership experience in a higher education setting.
  • For internal candidates: tenure and academic rank of associate professor or professor by July 1, 2026.
Required Education

Terminal degree in a departmentally related teaching field at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Demonstrated record of academic leadership and administrative experience as a department chair, associate chair, academic program director, or center director.
  • Experience with innovation in teaching, program development, and enrollment management.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within and across departments, campuses, modalities, and support units.
  • Familiarity with accreditation requirements relevant to the department.
  • Experience with evaluation, promotion, and tenure in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in a 2‑year access college environment.
  • Experience with assessment and leading assessment initiatives.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and fund management to support department, students, and faculty success.
