Job description

Overview
Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), a member hospital of Dartmouth Health (DH), is seeking an experienced, collaborative physician leader to serve as Department Chair of Anesthesia. In this position, you will maintain an active clinical practice while leading a team of anesthesiologists and anesthesiologist assistants.
As Department Chair, you will foster a culture of collaboration, support provider development and lead quality and performance improvement. The Chair will partner with the Director of Perioperative Services and Chair of Surgical Services to ensure alignment with institutional goals and strategic priorities while advancing clinical excellence and patient centered care.
  • Engaged Anesthesiology team which is highly invested in teamwork and optimal patient outcomes
  • Salary Range $550,000 - $560,000; this position includes a comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, retirement, PTO, and CME support). A sign-on bonus and relocation stipend may also be available, subject to eligibility
  • Eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) through 501 (c)(3) nonprofit status
  • 12 weeks of vacation, biannual CME allowance of $6,000 and malpractice insurance with tail coverage

Qualifications
  • Advanced clinical degree (MD or DO)
  • Post graduate training in residency program
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice and 2 years of leadership experience

Responsibilities
Position Summary
  • Maintain an active clinical practice and serve as a role model across anesthesia services
  • Set strategic goals for the department and lead efforts to improve patient outcomes and streamline perioperative workflows
  • Oversee quality improvement initiatives, monitor clinical performance and ensure compliance with institutional standards and regulatory requirements
  • Meet regularly with anesthesia staff to support clinical growth and advancement
  • Collaborate with administrative leaders locally and at the DH system level to optimize staffing models, operating room schedules and patient flow
  • Participate in department budgeting, monitor finances and revenue integrity
  • Participate in provider recruitment, retention, onboarding and succession planning
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with surgical colleagues and system-wide partners

About the Practice
  • 5 operating rooms and 2 endoscopy rooms running daily
  • Surgical services include general surgery, vascular, orthopedics, urology, OB/GYN, robotic and bariatric services
  • No spine, neurosurgical, cardiac or thoracic cases
  • 400 deliveries annually

Required Licensure/Certifications
  • Current or Eligible for Vermont Medical License
  • ABMS Board Certification
  • Active hospital staff membership
