The Tommy & Victoria Baker School of Business at The Citadel invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Head and Associate Professor/Professor in the Department of Accounting & Finance. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a thriving undergraduate department of approximately 300 students and 10 full-time faculty members within an AACSB-accredited business school committed to academic excellence, principled leadership, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will serve as Department Head while holding a faculty appointment in either Accounting or Finance at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Department Head reports directly to the Associate Dean of the Tommy & Victoria Baker School of Business.

The Department of Accounting & Finance seeks a collaborative, visionary, and student-centered academic leader who will build upon a strong foundation while helping shape the department's future. The successful candidate will join a collegial faculty dedicated to outstanding teaching, meaningful scholarship and professional engagement, and preparing graduates for successful careers in accounting, finance, and related professions.

Working collaboratively with faculty, the Associate Dean, and other university leaders, the Department Head will strengthen academic programs, recruit and mentor outstanding faculty, enhance student engagement and career readiness, foster innovation in teaching and learning, and cultivate relationships with alumni, employers, and the regional business community.

About the Department

The Department of Accounting & Finance offers Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree programs in Accounting and Finance and supports the Tommy & Victoria Baker School of Business through teaching in the Master of Business Administration program.

The department serves approximately 300 undergraduate students and consists of 10 full-time faculty members, supported by a talented group of adjunct faculty who contribute significant academic and professional expertise. As part of an AACSB-accredited business school, the department is committed to academic excellence, ethical leadership, continuous improvement, and student success.

Faculty are recognized for their commitment to outstanding teaching, close faculty-student engagement, scholarly and professional achievement, and service to the institution and profession. Students benefit from experiential learning opportunities including the Student-Managed Investment Fund, the Bastin Financial Leadership Laboratory featuring Bloomberg technology, internships, undergraduate research, and meaningful interaction with faculty mentors and business professionals.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • An earned doctorate in Accounting or Finance from an accredited institution.
  • Qualifications for appointment as a tenured Associate Professor or Professor.
  • A distinguished record of excellence in teaching, scholarly or professional engagement, and service appropriate to the applicant's academic rank.
  • Demonstrated academic leadership with evidence of sound judgment, collaboration, consensus building, and successful faculty development.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Successful experience as a department chair, department head, program director, associate dean, or in another significant academic leadership role.
  • Experience with AACSB accreditation, faculty qualifications, assurance of learning, strategic planning, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience with faculty recruitment, mentoring, evaluation, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Demonstrated success in developing partnerships with alumni, employers, professional organizations, and community stakeholders.
  • A leadership philosophy characterized by collaboration, transparency, integrity, accountability, innovation, and student success.

Responsibilities

The Department Head provides academic and administrative leadership for the Department of Accounting & Finance and works collaboratively with the Associate Dean, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external stakeholders to advance the department's mission and strategic priorities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic leadership and articulating a shared vision for the department's continued success.
  • Recruiting, mentoring, developing, supporting, and evaluating faculty and staff.
  • Promoting excellence in teaching, scholarly and professional engagement, and service.
  • Leading curriculum development, academic assessment, program review, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Providing departmental leadership for AACSB accreditation, including faculty qualifications, assurance of learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Managing departmental budgets, faculty workload assignments, course scheduling, and departmental resources.
  • Supporting innovation in curriculum, pedagogy, experiential learning, and student engagement.
  • Promoting student recruitment, retention, mentoring, and career preparation.
  • Building productive relationships with alumni, employers, advisory board members, and the business community.
  • Representing the department within the School of Business, throughout the University, and with external constituents.
  • Teaching courses appropriate to the successful candidate's discipline while maintaining faculty qualifications consistent with AACSB standards.

The Department Head teaches a reduced load of two courses per semester, allowing continued engagement in teaching, scholarship or professional engagement, and service while providing effective academic and administrative leadership. Administrative support is provided through a shared administrative assistant serving the School's three academic departments.
