City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education. Harold Washington College is a student-centered institution that empowers all members of its community through accessible and affordable academic advancement, career development and personal enrichment. We are actively seeking CPS alumni to join the team as Students on the Academic Rise (S.O.A.R.) Peer Mentor to join our team. The ideal S.O.A.R Peer Mentor will be detail-orientated, a quick learner, have solid time management and leadership skills and be flexible. This position requires the ability to speak one-on-one and in group settings to new and returning students about the Harold Washington College experience, share your own personal experiences and help new students transition more comfortably and successfully into college.ย ย 

Duties and Responsibilities:ย 

  1. Under the direction of the program supervisor and Peer Coaches, the S.O.A.R. Peer Mentor Student will act as the CCC student representative to prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, and the public.ย 

  1. Provides quality customer service to prospective, current and continuing Chicago Public School (CPS) mentees through outreach, mentoring interaction, campus events, and other engagement opportunities.ย ย 

  1. Answers questions that students may have about student life at one of the City Colleges of Chicagoย 

  1. Provides information about admissions, class registration, withdrawal and other academic transactions.ย 

  1. Provides information to students about student resources and extracurricular activities.ย 

  1. Participates in on-campus college recruiting activities.ย 

  1. Copies materials used for recruiting activities, admissions, registration and orientation.ย 

  1. Sets a positive/supportive introduction to the college for new and returning students.ย 

  1. Attends training sessions and meetings as required.ย 

  1. Adheres to the City Colleges of Chicago Customer Service Excellence Standards.ย 

Minimum Qualifications:ย 

  • High School Diploma required from a Chicago Public Schools network high schoolย ย 

  • Knowledge of City Colleges of Chicagoย 

  • Excellent oral communication skills.ย 

  • Excellent customer service skillsย ย 

  • Commits to satisfying internal and external customers.ย 

  • Promotes a positive role model and favorable public image as City Colleges of Chicago representativeย 

  • Good interpersonal skills with a positive attitude and demonstrably self-motivated.ย 

Eligibility Requirements:ย 

  • Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United Statesย 

  • Applicants must be actively attending Harold Washington College and remain an enrolled, HW Home Campus student, or recent gradutate to complete an academic year with their menteesย ย 

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 3-credit semester hoursย ย 

  • Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificateย 

  • Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students)ย 

  • Applicants must be in "good standing" - no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictionsย 

  • Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicagoย 

  • All positions are "employment at-will"ย 

Salary Range: ย $17.00 Per Hour

Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as other factors such as internal equity.
