How much do database programmers make?

Database programmers typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled professionals with knowledge of SQL, database management systems, and programming languages like Python or Java tend to have higher earning potential.

What is the difference between A Database Programmer vs A Database Developer?

AspectA Database ProgrammerA Database Developer
Primary RoleFocuses on writing, testing, and maintaining database scripts and queriesDesigns, develops, and manages entire database systems and structures
Skills & CertificationsSQL, PL/SQL, database scripting, certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst AssociateDatabase design, data modeling, SQL, certifications like Oracle Certified Professional
Work EnvironmentTypically in IT teams, working on specific database tasksInvolved in full database lifecycle, often collaborating with developers and analysts
Industry UsageCommon in organizations needing database scripting and maintenanceUsed in companies designing and implementing complex database systems

While both roles work with databases, a Database Programmer primarily writes and maintains database scripts, whereas a Database Developer designs and develops entire database systems. The roles often overlap, but the developer has a broader scope involving database architecture and planning.

What does a database programmer do?

A database programmer designs, develops, and maintains database systems to store, organize, and retrieve data efficiently. They write and optimize SQL queries, create database structures, and ensure data integrity and security, often using database management tools and programming languages. Their work supports applications and business operations that rely on accurate and accessible data.

Are database developers still in demand?

Database developers are still in demand as organizations rely on databases for data management, analytics, and application development. Skills in SQL, database design, and familiarity with tools like Oracle, MySQL, or SQL Server remain valuable in the job market, especially as data-driven decision-making grows across industries.

Is a DBA job in demand?

Database Administrator (DBA) roles are in high demand due to the increasing reliance on data management and security across industries. Skills in SQL, database design, and cloud platforms enhance job prospects, with many organizations seeking experienced DBAs to maintain and optimize their data systems.

Job description

DCS Air & Space Technology (AST) Sector is seeking a Database Architect to join our high-visibility, fast-paced MS&A and digital engineering team. If you are driven by architecting secure, scalable data solutions and motivated by supporting real national-security missions, this role places you at the forefront of advanced system analysis and emerging technology integration. At DCS-an employee-owned company recognized for agile, forward-leaning solutions across Defense, Aerospace, Human Factors, and Security-you will have the opportunity to shape foundational data infrastructures that enable next-generation analytical capabilities from your first day on the team.
As part of our organization, you will support cutting-edge defense research and development efforts while working alongside experts in modeling, simulation, optimization, and multi-disciplinary systems engineering. You will design the data architectures that underpin sophisticated analytical workflows, ensuring that models, tools, and computational processes can interoperate securely and efficiently across the Department of Defense. Your work will enable improved decision-making for emerging technologies and help ensure that complex analytical ecosystems remain robust, traceable, and architecturally sound.
Essential Job Functions:
As a Database Architect, you could expect to:
Collaborate with stakeholders to develop comprehensive use cases/user stories for multi-disciplinary analysis and optimization process (MDAO).
Derive requirements from user stories and map to technical solutions.
Develop schemas for the full MDAO lifecycle, including study design, model development, computational tool pedigree, component interconnection, parameter selection, executable artifact storage, and computational results.
Model workflows and interactions with databases in UML and/or SysML, such as with activity and sequence diagrams.
Design a granular, role-based security architecture using public key infrastructure and multi-factor authentication to allow free collaboration among teams and automated services (e.g., CI/CD pipelines and cloud computing environments) while protecting data at multiple security levels.
Create artifacts supporting the ATO process and deployment under existing systems' ATO.
Implement backend and frontend infrastructure using NoSQL database and Python/REST.
Communicate with stakeholders through diagrams, presentations, and written documentation.
Required Skills:
Due to the sensitivity of customer related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.
Must have an active Secret level U.S. DoD security clearance.
At least a BS degree in engineering, science, mathematics, or a related technical discipline and at least 12 years of related database architecture experience.
Strong understanding of data structures, including their design, selection, and application to optimize storage, retrieval, computation, and overall system performance.
Experience architecting and implementing service-oriented systems, such as microservices and REST-based services.
Proficiency with both relational and non-relational database technologies, including the ability to design, normalize, optimize, and maintain SQL databases as well as schema-flexible NoSQL systems.
Working knowledge of core network protocols, such as IP, TCP, and HTTP.
Practical application of security principles, including public key infrastructure (PKI), role-based access control (RBAC), and single sign-on (SSO).
Ability to work well in team environments.
Ability to travel, as required.
Desired Skills:
MS in engineering, science, mathematics, or related technical discipline.
Active Top Secret security clearance or higher.
Familiarity with modern software engineering best practices, including writing clean, maintainable code; applying test-driven development techniques; and contributing effectively within AGILE development environments.
Experience conducting use-case and user-story-driven requirements analysis.
Background in software and database architecture.
Ability to create abstract architecture models, such as UML or SysML diagrams.
Ability to tackle unfamiliar technical domains by using systematic reasoning, structured investigation, and iterative hypothesis-driven exploration.
