Job description

POSITION PURPOSEย

The Pastoral Assistant for Music provides liturgical and sacramental music leadership across Parish Familyย 31, Saint Vincent deย Paulย and Saint Theresa Parishes in Federal Way.ย This position inspires, organizes, coordinates, and serves as an accompanist for music for weekend and special liturgies, directsย choirs as needed, recruits and trains musicians, and collaborates with pastoral staff and school music teachers toย support a cohesive liturgical environment and formation.ย

The PA for Music ensures that music supportsย liturgical cohesion, rooted in Sacred Tradition, whichย integrates multiculturalย andย contemporary musicย expressionsย asย appropriate. This role is both pastoral and administrative, requiring musicalย proficiencyย (particularly singing,ย piano, and โ€“ ideally โ€“ organ), leadership, and collaborative skills.ย

PARISH FAMILY DETAILSย

Parish Family 31 is made up of two parishes, Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Theresa, in suburban Federal Way โ€“ between Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. October Mass attendance counts report around 1600ย attendeesย at the four English weekend Masses at St. Vincent,ย and around 1400 at five (two Spanish, three English) weekend Masses at St. Theresa.ย The school at St. Vincent, serving the parish family,ย currentlyย has 268 students enrolled; the school has a concert choir that occasionally sings for Masses.ย ย

Masses at St. Vincentย regularlyย feature a Pacific Islandย choir, a contemporary band,ย andย a more standard choir; Masses at St. Theresaย regularlyย feature a couple standard choirs, a Spanish band,ย andย a Spanish childrenโ€™s choir.ย Some special groups that have formed for occasional Masses are a Filipino choir, a womenโ€™s choir, and a bilingual young adult band.ย ย

Given suchย a variety of cultural and musical expression acrossย our liturgies, it is our desire toย cultivate aย moreย cohesive liturgical identity, especially byย guiding the parish family towards a deeper appreciation of ourย common liturgical heritage.ย ย

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIESย

1. Liturgical Music Leadershipย

  • Plan, select, and coordinate music for all Sunday Masses, Holy Days, and special celebrations across three campuses.ย

  • Coordinate with families/couples approaching the parish family for funerals/weddings (or other special liturgies) to oversee theย appropriate selectionย of music.ย ย

  • Select and prepare music thatย cultivatesย liturgical formation and cohesion, whileย encouraging theย full participation of the assemblyย (both internal and external).ย

  • Incorporate multiculturalย and contemporary musicalย expressions whenย appropriate, whileย remainingย faithful to the prescriptions andย traditionย of the Church.ย ย

  • Coordinate accompanist assignments for all choirs and liturgies, ensureย accompanimentย support asย required.ย

2. Choir Direction and Vocal Leadershipย

  • Recruit, train,ย supervise,ย and support parishย familyย choir members, cantors, and other ministers of music.ย

  • Direct rehearsals andย liturgiesย for choirsย as neededย and (whenย appropriate)ย oversee the delegation of this responsibility to other competent musical leaders.ย

  • Collaborate with school music teachers to coordinateย schoolย choir participation at school and parishย familyย Masses, asย appropriate.ย

  • Ensure accompanists and musicians are trained, scheduled, and appropriately compensated.ย

3. Music Program Accompaniment, Administration & Developmentย

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the parishย familyย music program in collaboration with pastoral staff.ย

  • Prepare and administer the Music Ministry budget as delegated by the Director ofย Liturgy.ย

  • Ensure copyright permissions, licensing, and music use fees are properly obtained.ย

  • Provide accompaniment and musical support for special liturgies beyond regular Masses as needed.ย

4. Collaboration & Multicultural Ministryย

  • Work with pastoral staff, consultative bodies, and multicultural ministry teams to integrate diverse musical traditions.ย

  • Participate in parishย family, regional, and Archdiocesan committees related to music and liturgy.ย
