How much do 3rd shift cna jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for 3rd shift cna in the United States is $20.06, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $22.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the unique challenges and rewards of working as a 3rd Shift CNA compared to other shifts?

Working as a 3rd Shift CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) often involves providing care during overnight hours, which can present challenges such as maintaining alertness during quiet periods and managing patients' nighttime needs. However, this shift also offers unique rewards, including a quieter work environment, closer-knit teams, and opportunities to develop strong time-management skills. Many facilities offer shift differentials for overnight work, and CNAs on third shift often play a key role in ensuring patient comfort and safety while most of the facility is at rest.

What is the difference between 3Rd Shift Cna vs 3Rd Shift Medical Assistant?

Aspect3Rd Shift Cna3Rd Shift Medical Assistant
CertificationsCertified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licenseCertified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
Work EnvironmentLong-term care facilities, hospitals, nursing homesClinics, outpatient facilities, hospitals
Job ResponsibilitiesBasic patient care, bathing, vital signsPatient intake, basic clinical tasks, administrative duties

While both roles often work night shifts in healthcare settings, a 3Rd Shift Cna primarily provides direct patient care and assistance with daily activities, whereas a 3Rd Shift Medical Assistant handles clinical and administrative tasks. The certifications differ, with CNAs requiring a CNA license and Medical Assistants needing CMA or RMA credentials. Their work environments overlap but also have distinct settings and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3rd Shift CNA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3rd Shift CNA, you need a current CNA certification, basic healthcare knowledge, and experience in patient care procedures. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and standard clinical equipment is important for documentation and patient monitoring. Reliability, strong communication, and the ability to work independently during overnight hours are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure that patients receive attentive, high-quality care even during less supervised shifts, maintaining safety and comfort throughout the night.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A 3rd shift CNA typically does not earn $10,000 a month without additional certifications or overtime. High earnings in healthcare roles usually require advanced experience, specialized skills, or working in high-demand facilities, but reaching $10,000 monthly without a degree is uncommon for this position. Some high-paying roles in sales, real estate, or entrepreneurship can reach that level without formal degrees, but they often depend on performance and market factors.

How much does a CNA make?

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in this region typically earns between $10 and $14 per hour, with an average annual salary around $25,000 to $30,000. Wages can vary based on experience, certifications, and the healthcare facility, and CNAs often work evening or night shifts as part of their schedule.

Why do so many CNAs quit?

Many CNAs quit due to low wages, physically and emotionally demanding work, and limited opportunities for advancement. The job often involves long shifts, including nights and weekends, which can lead to burnout and high turnover rates.

What are 3rd shift CNAs?

3rd shift CNAs, or Certified Nursing Assistants, are healthcare professionals who work overnight hours, typically from late evening until early morning (such as 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.). Their primary duties include assisting patients with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, and providing support to the nursing staff during nighttime hours. Working the 3rd shift often requires CNAs to be alert to handle emergencies and ensure patient safety while most of the facility is quieter. This shift can offer higher pay differentials and more flexibility for those who prefer overnight work.

What do 3rd shift CNAs do?

3rd shift CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) provide basic patient care during overnight hours, including assisting with activities of daily living, monitoring patient conditions, and supporting nursing staff. They work in healthcare settings such as hospitals and long-term care facilities, often requiring strong communication skills and adherence to safety protocols.
