1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer information

What is a 1099 contractor full stack developer?

A 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer is a self-employed professional who is hired to work on both front-end and back-end aspects of web development projects. The '1099' refers to the IRS form used to report income for independent contractors in the U.S., meaning they are not employees but work on a contractual basis. These developers typically manage their own taxes, work for multiple clients, and have flexibility in choosing their projects. They are responsible for delivering complete web solutions, from designing user interfaces to building and maintaining server-side logic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1099 contractor full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, HTML/CSS, and SQL), as well as experience with frameworks like React, Node.js, or Django. Familiarity with cloud platforms, version control systems like Git, and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer) are typically valuable. Excellent time management, communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial for meeting project deadlines and collaborating with diverse clients. These skills enable contractors to deliver high-quality, end-to-end solutions efficiently while adapting to varying project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by 1099 contractor full stack developers when managing multiple client projects?

As a 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer, one of the main challenges is effectively balancing multiple client projects with varying requirements and deadlines. Contractors are responsible for their own time management, communication, and project prioritization, which can be demanding without the structure of a traditional team. It's important to set clear expectations with clients, use project management tools, and maintain transparent communication to ensure all deliverables are met. Additionally, staying up-to-date with both front-end and back-end technologies is essential, as clients often expect versatile technical expertise.

Job description

Full Stack Mobile Developer (React Native, AWS)
Hybrid in Charleston, SC
Schedule: Flexible hours
Engagement: PT, FT, Contract; Possible equity.
About Heirloom
Heirloom helps families rescue, organize, and enjoy their most meaningful memories-digitizing tapes, film, and photos into a private, secure home for stories. We're building delightful mobile and web experiences that make sharing memories simple, safe, and emotionally resonant.
The Role
We're looking for a Full Stack Mobile Developer with experience launching production-ready apps to both the App Store and Google Play. You'll be responsible for building, shipping, and maintaining our React Native mobile applications in an AWS environment. You'll collaborate closely with our Full Stack Project Lead, Back End Developer, and UI/UX Designer to deliver secure, performant, and emotionally engaging experiences.
What You'll Do
  • Build and ship iOS and Android applications using React Native, ensuring seamless performance across devices.
  • Own the deployment process to the App Store and Google Play, including provisioning, compliance, and updates.
  • Collaborate with the Full Stack Project Lead, Back End Developer, and UI/UX Designer to translate requirements into user-ready features.
  • Integrate with AWS services (e.g., Cognito, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB) for authentication, storage, and APIs.
  • Ensure performance, scalability, and security of mobile apps within the AWS ecosystem.
  • Write clean, maintainable code with a focus on reusability, testing, and reliability.
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and optimize mobile apps based on QA and user feedback.
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and best-practice improvements.

What You'll Bring
  • 3-6+ years experience in mobile app development, with at least one production app launched on both iOS and Android.
  • Strong proficiency in React Native and its ecosystem (navigation, hooks, state management).
  • Experience integrating and managing applications in an AWS environment.
  • Solid understanding of mobile deployment workflows, certificates, and store submission guidelines.
  • Ability to collaborate with designers and back end developers, ensuring smooth handoffs and shared understanding.
  • Familiarity with mobile-first design patterns and performance optimization.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to balance speed with code quality.

Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with multimedia handling (image/video upload, transcoding, playback).
  • Experience with consumer SaaS products, subscriptions, or in-app purchases.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines for mobile app deployment.
  • Interest in privacy-first architecture and building software that prioritizes user trust.

How We Work
  • Flexible hours with core overlap for collaboration.
  • Remote-friendly, with preference for hybrid collaboration in Charleston, SC (work sessions with leadership, user tests, occasional shoots).
  • We welcome contractors, part-time, or full-time; contract-to-hire is an option. Equity available for the right fit.
