Job Title:Laboratory Research Operations Lead TechnicianDepartment:FAES | School of Environment and Natural Resources

A Laboratory Research Operations Lead Technician position is available in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE) in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University (OSU).


We seek to hire a motivated individual to support our research team focused on hydrology, soil, and water quality research in Ohio's agricultural and urban landscapes. This position will contribute to the collection and analysis of water quality samples under guidance from senior faculty and staff. The primary responsibility will be to independently operate a discrete colorimetric autoanalyzer (Seal AQ400) for analysis of agricultural monitoring water quality samples. Relevant duties will include preparing chemical reagents, stocks, and standards, as well as data input and managing data exports from the instrumentation. The individual will lead and assist with fieldwork, primarily water sample collection. Additional activities will include data processing and analysis, laboratory maintenance tasks, and supporting ongoing research efforts as needed. The position will lead the training and management of undergraduate student workers in the laboratory and assign daily tasks. The position will be located on the Columbus campus. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Taylor Fulton, Laboratory Services Coordinator. The position will be part of a larger team of senior faculty, staff, and students that work within FABE.


Functions:

  • Manage and administer water quality research programs within Ecohydrology Laboratory
  • Operate a discrete colorimetric autoanalyzer (Seal AQ400), ICP-OES, and laser-diffraction PSA for analysis of urban and agricultural water quality samples and other relevant research projects
  • Prepare chemical reagents, stocks, and standards
  • Lead sample and data management (data input and export)
  • Contribute to water sample collection through fieldwork
  • Maintain laboratory function through cleaning, organization, and preparation of laboratory supplies
  • Train, manage, and supervise undergraduate and graduate students on laboratory methods
  • Assist as needed in sample preparation, such as filtering and digesting water samples

Sub-functions:

  • Leads, conducts or assists with basic or applied research
  • Communicates task completion and any arising issues with supervisors
  • Coordinates with supervisors for task allocation to maximize time efficiency
  • Monitors inventory and coordinates supply orders
  • Development and performance of technical protocols and procedures
  • Design, construction, and upkeep of equipment and space

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED and 4 years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with benchtop chemistry and laboratory methods
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation
  • Experience with fieldwork and water sampling
  • Practical knowledge of Ohio water quantity and quality issues
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
