Job description

The Diesel Technician is responsible for ensuring the optimal operation of diesel equipment by performing thorough inspections, preventive maintenance, and necessary repairs. This role requires expertise in diagnosing and correcting vehicle deficiencies, making mechanical adjustments, and aligning components to maintain performance and safety standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive inspections and diagnostic tests to assess vehicle condition and identify worn or damaged parts.
  • Perform a detailed courtesy check to ensure all components are in proper working order.
  • Utilize a company-provided tablet to document repairs with before and after pictures.
  • Execute preventive maintenance schedules, including component installations, part upgrades, corrosion control, and winterization procedures.
  • Repair and replace major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and systems, including:
    • Power and drive trains
    • Electrical and air conditioning systems
    • Fuel and emissions systems
    • Brakes, steering, and hydraulic systems
  • Conduct test drives and system adjustments to verify vehicle performance.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state vehicle regulations, including engine testing, safety checks, and combustion control standards.
  • Perform DOT Inspections as required.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle service records, documenting all repairs and maintenance performed.
  • Ensure shop equipment remains operational by following maintenance procedures, troubleshooting breakdowns, and scheduling repairs.
  • Monitor inventory levels, order necessary parts, and verify receipt of materials.
  • Stay up to date with industry standards, regulations, and technical advancements through training and continued education.
  • Maintain clear and proactive communication with the Service Advisor, Shop Foreman, and Parts Advisor regarding vehicle status, additional repairs, and any issues impacting repair timelines.
  • Adhere to and promote workplace safety protocols to ensure a secure work environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Shop Foreman, Shop Manager, or Service Advisor.

Required Skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and repair guides
  • Proficiency in mechanical and technical diagnostics
  • Strong mathematical aptitude for measurements and calibrations
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Effective time management and problem-solving abilities

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 1 year of related diesel repair experience

Qualifications:

  • ASE Certification (preferred)
  • Valid driver's license required

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to loud noise levels
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors
  • Frequent requirement to stand, kneel, and work in awkward positions

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 100 lbs
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, kneel, crouch, and crawl as needed for repairs
